| " NEVER GIVE UP " |

At the time, I was working as a Nurses Assistant
at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Ma. A patient I was caring for
had a massive stroke and his prognosis wasn't good. The doctors had
told his wife she should start looking for a Nursing Home. He was
an elderly man in his early seventies.
His wife was a frail looking woman on the outside, but on the inside I could see she wasn't ready to give up on him. As the weeks went on she sat closely by his side. Her husband would mumble every now and then, but he said nothing she could really understand. Whenever I could I would talk to him. He usually mumbled back.
Then one day I thought I heard him say " horses " and then he said it again, " horses. " I started asking him, " Do you like horses ? Do you own horses?" His eyes opened wide. He was trying to communicate. His mind was still there. I was so happy. I couldn't wait to tell his wife and my head nurse. It was a beginning I thought. Maybe in a few days he would say even more.
When his wife came in I couldn't wait to tell her the great news. Although I didn't want to get her hopes up, I knew I had to take the risk. I thought this could be the best news she would hear all week. I told her he was mumbling a lot during the day. Then I said,
" He kept saying over and over " horses " Did he love horses ? I asked.
She looked at me and said, " No honey. "
" Well maybe he did when he was a child," I said.
She continued to say " No. " Then she said. "I know you're trying to help him, but I think the doctors are right. I'll never be able to communicate with him."
I didn't know what to say. I felt so sorry for her because I could see she was giving up hope. I knew in my heart I was right. I turned to walk out of the room and as I did, I came face to face with a beautiful picture of horses. It was hanging in his room the whole time.
I shouted,
" Look Horses ! Is that what you've been trying to tell me ? " His
eyes were gleaming as they filled with fluid. His wife started hugging
him. As I started walking out of the room I heard her say, " Thank
you. "

In the
weeks that followed his speech had improved so much they were communicating
quite well.

| " HARD FOR SOME TO SAY THE WORDS " |
Since those days I have never heard the words " I love you " from my dad. This was something I needed to hear more than ever in high school. The words never came, and somehow I could never find the courage, or whatever, to ask him myself; that is, if he still loved me.
Seven months ago I got
married to the most wonderful man. Minutes before the wedding my dad
found me and asked everyone in the room to leave so he could talk
to his daughter alone. My heart jumped. The moment I had waited for
all my life was here, the frightful
" Daddy-Daughter " talk.
My dad dropped to his knees and started crying ! I have never in all of my life seen him in tears. He poured out his heart in what seemed like an eternity. He told me about all the things he wished he could have told me, done with me, seen me do that he missed and how sorry he was. Then he stood up, placed his hands on the side of my face and said, " I know I haven't been the best daddy. I've tried to provide everything I could for you and your brothers and something got lost. Us ! I love you, and don't ever forget wherever you are and whatever you are doing, you'll always be Daddy's Little Girl. "
Then he grabbed my hand
and we walked down the isle to the rest of my life !

One day on the Tri-State Tollway I saw a stranded limo with a flat tire. I got a good look at the situation because it was rush hour traffic and I wasn't going very fast. I thought I might be of some assistance since I happened to have a hydraulic jack in the trunk of my car, a 1992 Pontiac Grand Am.I decided to stop and help the driver. Coming from the left lane to the right shoulder made pulling over no easy task. But, I managed to do so and eventually did help the driver. As I was walking back to my car, the rear window of the limo rolled down. The man sitting in the back seat was Donald Trump. He asked me how much for my services. I told him a handshake would do.
The next day, my 1992 Grand Am became a 1996 Grand Am. A letter at home confirmed it. It read:
" Thanks for the help. The car is yours. I found you by your license plate number. Call me. (***)***-**** ! ! ! "

~ GOOD INSURANCE ~
JUST A GLASS OF MILK ! One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his way through school, found he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry. He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water.
She thought he looked hungry so brought him a large glass of milk.
He drank it slowly, and then asked, " How much do I owe you ? "
" You don't owe me anything, " she replied.
" Mother has taught us never to accept pay for a kindness. "
He said....." Then I thank you from my heart. "
As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but his faith in God and man was strong also. He had been ready to give up and quit.
Year's later that young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease. Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately he rose and went down the hall of the hospital to her room.
Dressed in his doctor's gown he went in to see her. He recognized her at once. He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day he gave special attention to the case.
After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval.
He looked at it, then wrote something on the edge and the bill was sent to her room. She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally she looked, and something caught her attention on the side of the bill.
She read these words.....
" Paid in full with one glass of milk " Dr. Howard Kelly
