I can not take any credit for the this page, yes I made it but all the information came from various vintage sites. The thing about these sites is that when items are sold they are generally not shown anymore. I therefore thought I'd rescue some of the imformation and pass it on to you.
The original main purpose of women's short "spencer" jackets was to be worn over gowns that had short sleeves and/or low necklines, to prevent any skin below the neck from being directly exposed to cold air.
1870
This wedding gown is from 1895. At that time wedding gowns were generally not white since this allowed the gown to have a post-wedding life as the brides best dress. 1899 1900 This lovely two piece from 1908 is made out of a cream wool flannel, pink velvet, hand knotted cotton mesh and silk embroidery floss. It is a master piece of of hand work as you can see in the pictures above.
This afternoon dress from 1915 has an a symmetrical fron closing.
