Finally, there are myths concerning sparrows, those familiar brown birds of backyards and city parks. Juliet Piggott describes the story of one particular sparrow:

"[A] wicked neighbour, a washer-woman, cut the tongue of a sparrow in punishment for pecking at her rice starch. The bird, which had been fed regularly by the old couple next door, flew away and the kind couple went in search of it. They found it and its family and were offered the choice of two boxes to take away...[they] chose the smaller of the boxes and when they opened it on their return they found it contained an endless supply of riches....The washer-woman set out, motivated by envy, to find the Tongue-Cut Sparrow and his family. She, too, was...given the choice of two boxes to take away with her. Typically she chose the larger one and on opening it was seized upon by a horde of devils which devoured her (110).

Katamari Damacy presents sparrows as objects players can roll up, and in the process it makes reference to the tale of the Tongue-cut Sparrow.

(Katamari Damacy, np)

The game's description of sparrows states that "sparrows will pay you back if you are kind to them" (np). This is just like the story of the tongue-cut sparrow, as the old couple who took care of the sparrow and were kind to it were repaid in full for their good deeds.
