Mountains and Valleys
by Dori Weidmer
On the mountain I saw the lightning
Which took away my sight.
And unseeingly, I reached out
Into the darkness of the night.
On the mountain I felt the earthquake
That trembled all around me.
I tried to hold on to my pride,
But it fell into the sea.
On the mountain, I heard the thunder.
It shook me to my knees.
It sounded all around me.
Until I whispered, "Please..."
On the mountain I heard the whisper.
And in it was your name.
And once the sound was gone
It began to gently rain.
On the mountain I raised my useless eyes
Into your falling glory
And colors I had never known
Revealed to me your story.
From the mountain I saw the valley
That stretched out far below me
And looked forward to the challenge
Of my long and strenuous journey.
For I knew that on that mountain
I had gained an awesome ally.
One who'd never leave me
On the mountain or in the valley.
