About A Morong Sketchbook
A Morong
Sketchbook is a collection of literary sketches of people, places and things
in Morong, Rizal. It is part of the ongoing Lahing San Miguel Web Project.
The present
edition contains five essays - all written by Rey SM. Aquino, Diko
Ennie to us in the San Miguel clan. Some of these were written for souvenir
programs of reunions and other gatherings of Moronguenos in the US. Some
Diko Ennie just wrote for posting in the family listserv or for distribution
to friends.
Since this
is meant for Morong public viewing and because the essays deal with
the relatively distant past - the 50s mostly, a short profile of the writer
would be indispensable.
Rey SM.
Aquino, a.k.a. Tagpe, is the second child of Aurelia San Miguel of Morong,
Rizal and Atanacio Aquino of Hagunoy, Bulacan. He was born in Morong and
lived in Morong for 28 years. He was a Morriz Band member and a sakristan.
He graduated from the Tomas Claudio Memorial Elementary School and the
Morong High School. He played basketball for the Stony Club, the Holy Name
Society and the Morong All-Stars.
After finishing
his bachelor's degree at the University of the East, he taught at the St.
Jerome's Academy and at the Southern Institute in his father's hometown.
In the late 50s, he taught at the Makati School District, where he joined
the famous Rizal Public School Teachers Folk Dance Troupe and Symphony
Orchestra. He was back in Morong High School in the early 60s - this time
as band instructor, basketball coach and history teacher.
He joined
the US Coast Guard in 1962 and spent his military service in New York,
where he met and married Nina Cruz. He was later assigned in Virginia and
enrolled as a part-time student at the William and Mary University until
1967.
After his
discharge from the service, his family went back to the Philippines. He
took up graduate studies at the University of the East while working as
a part-time instructor at the Community College. After receiving his master's
degree, his family moved to New York, USA. He obtained a graduate degree
in Media at the New School, New York.
Diko Ennie's
family is presently living in Clearwater, Florida.
We are
keeping the pages open for contributions from Moronguenos out there.
Please send us your articles about
Morong. Hopefully, a second edition
will include more writers . Also, we have provided a message
board so you can participate in
the discussion of Morong stuff. Remember that you have the right not to
remain silent. Out here, hanruke is a positive word.
It was
a pleasure putting together this website. I'll drop by as often as I could
to help Diko Ennie manage it or to join you in the message board discussions.
Sige.
