The Sabbats
What is the wheel of the year? It is the Pagan calender, marked by the Sabbats, or holidays, of the year. Why is it called the Wheel? Because all holidays relate to others either in simularity or in opposition. The Wheel is about the changing of the seasons, winter to spring, springs to summer, summer to autumn and autumn to winter, agains! It shows the birth, life, and death of the Sun God, and the life, maiden, mother and crone, of the Goddess.
What is a Sabbat, and when, and what do they celebrate? Wiccans celebrate the Sabbats marking changes to our natural Earth. Sabbats generally fall on equinoxes and solstices, when major milestones are reached. (Such as the longest and shortest day of the year, when we begin to tilt toward and away from the sun, etc.) The Sabbats, as said earlier, depict the life and death of the Sun God, who is born, ages and dies during the Sabbats. This is not a bad thing, because Wiccans believe in reincarnation the Sun will surely be reborn the following year.
So, Celebrate!
