MONDO EARTHQUAKE
Last update: Thursday, 12/25/2003, 10:41 PM Taiwan time

NOTE: Because the Central Weather Bureau changes their links so often, it is unlikely that any of the "View data here" links on this page will work. It is equally unlikely that I will be able to fix these broken links one by one. Sorry about that! However, you might be able to locate the reports for yourself here by simply using the dropdown menus in the top frame of that page to choose the year and month, then following the links below the seismicity map which should appear in the bottom frame.

8:57 PM, 25.6 km west of Hualien, magnitude 4.4, depth 3 km. View data here.

Concerning this afternoon's 6.7 quake, 18 people were said to have been trapped by falling rocks in a tunnel in the area of Taroko Gorge, but all walked out unhurt. In another location, a motorcyclist had his leg broken by a falling rock. TV news reports of the quake showed footage from surveillance cameras in which people could be seen running from department stores. The reports also say that more aftershocks with magnitudes of 4 or 5 may be felt over the next couple of days.
(MT) Sunday, September 10, 2000, 5:29 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - As predicted recently by Central Weather Bureau seismologists, a big quake hit Hualien about half an hour ago:

4:54 PM, 8.1 km north of Hualien, magnitude 6.2, depth 20 km. View data here.

It was felt across much of Taiwan and caused power outages as far away as Taipei. So far, the TV news hasn't reported any further problems, but I will certainly post any information I receive as soon as possible. You can also see a larger GIF image with Chinese characters here. The difference in this image is that it plots out the vibrations of the earthquake using colors to show how different areas of the island felt the quake.
(MT) Saturday, September 9, 2000, 11:41 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - More shaking in the Hualien area tonight:

(MT) Wednesday, August 30, 2000, 11:32 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Yet another small quake struck the Hualien area late this afternoon:

5:00 PM, 7.1 km NW of Hualien, magnitude 3.2, depth 6.5 km. View data here.
(MT) Wednesday, August 30, 2000, 1:25 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - The CWB's English-language quake reports are once again in working order. The latest posting is a quake which occurred deep underground in southern Pingtung County:

(MT) Monday, August 28, 2000, 12:37 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - I don't usually post the "seconds" in the times of earthquake reports, but these two occurred within a minute of each other this morning:

9:51:17.5 AM, 4.8 km NNW of Hualien, magnitude 3.3, depth 6.2 km. View data here.
9:51:52.4 AM, 4.8 km NNW of Hualien, magnitude 3.2, depth 7.3 km. View data here.

While these two quakes were small and weren't felt over a large area, they are probably significant when considering the recent prediction by the CWB of an imminent large-scale quake.
(MT) Saturday, August 26, 2000, 5:35 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - I'm currently digging up the Central Weather Bureau's earthquake reports by accessing their Chinese-language website and deducing the location of the English image files (for which I can presently find no direct links). Here's a quake which occurred early this afternoon in northern Taiwan:

1:36 PM, 19 km SE of Miaoli, magnitude 4.3, depth 7.6 km. View data here.
(MT) Thursday, August 24, 2000, 12:04 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - The Central Weather Bureau has gone and screwed up their website some more, so I haven't been able to find the last 3 days of earthquake reports. Here they are, at last:

Monday, 3:02 AM, 45.1 km SSW of Yushan (Jade Mountain), magnitude 4.5, depth 5.6 km. View data here.
Monday, 3:04 AM, 46.1 km SSW of Yushan, magnitude 4.6, depth 3 km. View data here.

(MT) Wednesday, August 23, 2000, 11:48 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - Most schools and government offices across Taiwan are closed today because of Super-Typhoon Bilis which is crossing the island as I type. The CWB must've taken a day off, too, because I was awakened this morning by a quake which didn't make it onto their website. CTV News reported this info in a scrolling report during regular programming:

8:49 AM, 35.2 km south of Hualien, magnitude 5.7, depth 27.2 km. View a CNN report which includes the data here.

Last night, the typhoon's winds had already torn the roofs off some of the shelters in Nantou built for victims of the 921 earthquake. Landslide warnings have been issued to residents of mountainous areas all over Taiwan, and many people have evacuated to safer areas. Watch CNN video of the storm using QuickTime, RealPlayer, or Windows Media Player here.

9:23 AM, 16.2 km SSW of Yushan (Jade Mountain), magnitude 4.2, depth 3 km. View data here.
(MT) Wednesday, August 9, 2000, 10:31 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - While there have been no new quake reports since last night, the CWB has some alarming news. Because of increasing recent seismic activity near Hualien, they are predicting that an earthquake of at least 6 in magnitude may occur in that region soon. Between July 9 and July 17 of this year, a total of 16 quakes of at least 4 in magnitude have occurred. The bureau says that these are not aftershocks of last year's 921 quake. In addition to the recent quakes, it has been 6 years since such a large quake has struck the area, the last one being a 6.2 quake which occurred on June 5, 1994. Seismologists say that the pressure under the earth has been building up during this time and that its release is inevitable.
(MT) Tuesday, August 8, 2000, 11:18 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - A quake which didn't even register as a magnitude-1 tremor on the CWB's seismographs in Taichung shook my computer monitor a short time ago:

10:31 PM, 38.5 km SSW of Yushan (Jade Mountain), magnitude 4.3, depth 3 km. View data here.
(MT) Monday, August 7, 2000, 1:51 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Two quakes have been reported by the CWB since the last update to this page, one occurring Sunday evening, and the other late this morning. Here are the details:

Sunday, 5:51 PM, 41.3 km SE of Miaoli (putting the epicenter near Wulai), magnitude 4.7, depth 12.3 km. View data here.
Monday, 11:11 AM, 18.8 km south of Yushan (Jade Mountain), magnitude 4.6, depth 3 km. View data here.
(MT) Saturday, August 5, 2000, 11:14 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - A quake far offshore from Hualien was reported this morning:

The Taipei Times today published a story about yesterday morning's 6.1 magnitude quake. It includes an image of one of the boulders that damaged a house in Nantou County.
(MT) Saturday, July 29, 2000, 10:05 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - A fourth quake has struck Taiwan today:

1:15 PM, 2.2 km ENE of Chiayi, magnitude 4.4, depth 8.9 km. View data here.
(MT) Saturday, July 29, 2000, 12:31 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - A strong and shallow quake lasting over 30 seconds woke me up in the middle of the night and sent me running for the door. It was felt across the entire island as well as by seismographs on the offshore islands of Makung and Lanyu. According to the Chinese-language CTS News at noon, it sent large boulders tumbling down a mountainside onto a home in Nantou County, but there were no injuries incurred because the entire family was in the living room chatting! Two other quakes followed a short time later. Here are the stats:

4:28 AM, 9.7 km southSSW (sic) of Yushan (Jade Mountain), magnitude 6.1, depth 4 km. View data here.
5:32 AM, 9.3 km southSSW (sic) of Yushan, magnitude 4.6, depth 3 km. View data here.
6:41 AM, 9.7 km southSSW (sic) of Yushan, magnitude 4.0, depth 3 km. View data here.

While the second and third quakes were a bit smaller than the first, they were also shallower, but their vibrations didn't reach nearly as far. Take a look at the data images (via the links above) to see for yourself.
(MT) Friday, July 28, 2000, 10:05 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - A small quake was reported by the CWB today:

(MT) Wednesday, July 19, 2000, 3:35 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Here's the info from the latest CWB quake report:

12:46 PM, 25.1 km NW of Hualien, magnitude 4.7, depth 8 km. View data here.
(MT) Monday, July 17, 2000, 4:36 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - They just keep coming. This one was felt over the northern two-thirds of the island:

2:50 PM, 27.9 km ENE of Hualien, magnitude 5.3, depth 10.6 km. View data here.
(MT) Monday, July 17, 2000, 2:04 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - A HUGE offshore quake was reported by yesterday's Chinese-language TV news. I didn't post the information yesterday because I couldn't verify the quake with the Taiwan Central Weather Bureau's Seismology Center. This is because it was located outside the area where the CWB has its sensors. This morning's English-language China Times reports the following info (slightly different from the Chinese-language edition):

Sunday, 11:21 AM, 222.1 km south of Lanyu (Orchid Island), magnitude 7.0, depth 10.6 km. No data-map is available for this quake, but you can read the China Times article here.
(MT) Saturday, July 15, 2000, 12:32 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Two more quakes occurred yesterday, both of which had a magnitude greater than 5.0 (bringing Friday's total to six), and there's already been another one today:

Friday, 5:40 PM, 11.7 km WNW of Hualien, magnitude 5.1, depth 21.6 km. View data here.
Friday, 10:45 PM, 16.4 km SSE of Ilan, magnitude 5.2, depth 75.3 km. View data here.
Saturday, 7:04 AM, 16.3 km ENE of Hualien, magnitude 4.9, depth 7 km. View data here.
(MT) Friday, July 14, 2000, 3:49 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Although this one was reported to have not been felt in Taichung, it shook my computer monitor:

3:18 PM, 12.6 km east of Hualien, magnitude 4.7, depth 8 km. View data here.
(MT) Friday, July 14, 2000, 1:16 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Three big quakes, each larger than the last, occurred just off the coast of Hualien today:

1:36 AM, 14.5 km ENE of Hualien, magnitude 5.0, depth 3.5 km. View data here.
6:01 AM, 18.8 km east of Hualien, magnitude 5.5, depth 3 km. View data here.

(MT) Thursday, July 11, 2000, 11:01 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - A tremor struck near the border of Taichung and Changhua Counties tonight:

8:35 PM, 19.9 km southSSW (sic) of Taichung, magnitude 4.4, depth 7.8 km. View data here.
(MT) Wednesday, July 12, 2000, 12:35 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - A tremor occurred not far off the coast of Hualien Tuesday night:

Tuesday, 8:30 PM, 14.9 km ENE of Hualien, magnitude 4.3, depth 14 km. View data here.

Tuesday night's Chinese-language news reported that there is a rumor being spread via e-mail of an "imminent quake." I won't spread this rumor further by repeating it verbatim, but if you hear of any unsubstantiated quake predictions, don't believe them.
(MT) Tuesday, July 11, 2000, 1:10 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - A tremor this morning had an unusual effect. Some places further away from the epicenter felt vibrations stronger than some places nearer the epicenter. Miaoli and Yunlin, for example, felt this quake as a magnitude 2 while Taichung City and even Sun Moon Lake felt only a magnitude 1 tremor. Also, while it was much closer to Sun Moon Lake, the Central Weather Bureau reported its location in relation to Yushan. Here are the stats:

8:40 AM, 39.9 km NNE of Yushan (Jade Mountain), magnitude 4.7, depth 28.1 km. View data here.
(MT) Monday, July 10, 2000, 9:33 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - A sharp quake which was actually off the east coast of Taiwan startled me as I was getting ready to go out this afternoon:

4:32 PM, 35.9 km SSE of Hualien, magnitude 5.2, depth 39 km. View data here.
(MT) Monday, July 10, 2000, 4:03 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - A quake hit northeastern Taiwan this afternoon:

2:23 PM, 33.3 km SSE of Ilan, magnitude 4.7, depth 19.7 km. View data here.
(MT) Friday, July 7, 2000, 8:44 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Three quakes occurred near the east coast of Taiwan today, the second of these being slightly offshore:

1:35 PM, 8.4 km northNNE (sic) of Hualien, magnitude 4.4, depth 31.6 km. View data here.
6:17 PM, 15.1 km NE of Hualien, magnitude 4.8, depth 2.2 km. View data here.
8:25 PM, 41.6 km southSSW (sic) of Ilan, magnitude 4.0, depth 8.7 km. View data here.
(MT) Friday, July 7, 2000, 11:03 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - Today's Chinese-language China Times reports yesterday's magnitude 5.0 quake in Chiayi as being "normal" according to the Taiwan Central Weather Bureau's Seismology Center. While I would agree that it is an all-too-common occurrence these days, I wouldn't recommend taking matters like this quake so lightly.

In the meantime, 2 more quakes were reported yesterday:

4:58 PM, 20 km SSW of Yushan (Jade Mountain), magnitude 4.9, depth 3 km. View data here.
7:09 PM, 25.4 km SE of Chiayi, magnitude 4.1, depth 12 km. View data here.
(MT) Thursday, July 6, 2000, 11:47 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - After a whole week with no reports, another quake near Chiayi shook all but the northern third of Taiwan about half an hour ago:

11:12 AM, 25 km SE of Chiayi, magnitude 5.0, depth 9.8 km. View data here.
(MT) Thursday, June 29, 2000, 12:07 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Another tremor occurred in northeastern Taiwan a short while ago:

11:23 AM, 28.2 km northNNE (sic) of Hualien, magnitude 4.3, depth 16.6 km. View data here.
(MT) Wednesday, June 28, 2000, 11:31 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - A deep offshore quake was felt all across the northern tip of Taiwan tonight:

7:35 PM, 74.5 km ESE of Ilan, magnitude 5.3, depth 88 km. View data here.
(MT) Monday, June 26, 2000, 11:55 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - While 6 days have passed without a report of seismic activity, there is other quake news. Because people in central Taiwan have protested to the Central Weather Bureau's Seismology Center about the number of quakes having their epicenters being reported in relation to Sun Moon Lake, the Bureau will supposedly use other locations to report tremors. While quakes which have had epicenters within 5 km of each other have been reported in relation to places up to 75 km apart, the protestors are saying that the reports are hurting tourism in the Sun Moon Lake area. If you look at the previous six months of reports and use your "Find" function (search for: Sun Moon Lake, "of Taichung," Yushan, and Chiayi), you'll see that these places are all mentioned with nearly the same frequency. (Note: searching for "Taichung" will find the heading of every report.)
(MT) Tuesday, June 20, 2000, 1:10 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - This morning, I was once again awakened very early by a rather large quake:

5:56 AM, 49.6 km ESE of Taichung, magnitude 5.7, depth 22.7 km. View data here.
(MT) Tuesday, June 20, 2000, 3:22 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - I didn't feel this other large quake which happened Monday afternoon while I was riding the bus:

Monday, 3:32 PM, 49 km ESE of Taichung, magnitude 5.1, depth 24.1 km. View data here.
(MT) Monday, June 19, 2000, 11:53 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - Due to a change of residence, I've been offline for a few days. During that time, 11 quakes have occurred, the latest one awakening me early this morning. Here they are in chronological order:

Monday, June 12, 7:17 PM, 43.9 km NNE of Yushan (Jade Mountain), magnitude 4.3, depth 25 km. View data here.
Tuesday, June 13, 8:45 AM, 43.4 km NNE of Yushan, magnitude 4.3, depth 28.5 km. View data here.

Monday, June 19 (today), 6:44 AM, 47.9 km ESE of Taichung, magnitude 5.3, depth 23.2 km. View data here.

Now that I'm back online, I hope to be bringing less frequent but more timely reports to you.
(MT) Monday, June 12, 2000, 4:50 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - A huge quake hit central Taiwan early Sunday morning followed by several sizeable aftershocks. The first quake shook the entire island for about a minute causing at least 2 deaths and 32 injuries and was felt even in Hong Kong:

Sunday, 2:23 AM, 47.4 km NNE of Yushan (Jade Mountain), magnitude 6.7, depth 10.2 km. View data here.

Sunday, 2:26 AM, 49.3 km NNE of Yushan, magnitude 4.7, depth 14 km. View data here.

Monday, 4:11 AM, 45 km NNE of Yushan, magnitude 5.0, depth 26.6 km. View data here.

Lee Chun-huang, 49, and Yang Shao-wu, 71, both patients at Nantou's Puli Veterans Hospital, died of heart attacks brought on by the quake . A couple of the injuries were broken limbs and abrasions incurred by people in Nantou and Taichung Counties jumping from second story windows to escape their residences. Although it has been reported that no buildings collapsed during the 6.7 magnitude quake, some friends of mine got a good fright when a water tower on an adjacent building tipped over shortly after the tremor and dumped its contents on them. A rather unusual injury that occurred was that of a student who dislocated his jawbone while "screaming in terror" during the quake. Read the article in the Monday, June 12, 2000 edition of the Taipei Times.
(MT) Wednesday, June 7, 2000, 9:09 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - A tremor hit northeastern Taiwan yesterday morning:

Tuesday, 9:49 AM, 33.6 km SW of Ilan, magnitude 4.8, depth 9.2 km. View data here.

A huge quake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale struck some 104 km (65 miles) off the coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra late Sunday night. Due to the quake's depth (40 km--25 miles) and offshore location, it looks like the damage and casualties won't be nearly as serious as those resulting from the Taiwan quake of last September. Still, this was a huge quake, and more than 100 people have died while even more have been injured. Tens of thousands of others have been left homeless as a result of building collapses. A rescue team from Taiwan's Pingtung County that was formed after the 921 Quake was mobilized to assist with the relief effort in this disaster.
(MT) Friday, June 2, 2000, 9:12 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - There was a quake just off the coast of Taitung County early this morning:

7:46 AM, 14.2 km NE of Tawu, magnitude 4.7, depth 11.8 km. View data here.

In other quake related news, a 4-year old boy in Taipei County's Pinglin Mountainous Area was bitten--almost fatally--by a poisonous spider with a legspan of 8 cm (~3.2 inches) which normally inhabits the central and southern regions of Taiwan. An article in the evening edition of yesterday's Chinese-language United Daily News said that these spiders have a potential spread of 20 cm (~8 inches). It was said that after the 921 Quake these spiders made a mass migration northward. Read that article (in Big-5 Chinese encoding) here.
(MT) Tuesday, May 30, 2000, 10:46 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - A tremor occurred south of Taichung City this morning:

8:58 AM, 18.7 km WNW of Sun Moon Lake, magnitude 4.4, depth 27 km. View data here.
(MT) Sunday, May 28, 2000, 1:13 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - Another quake of larger magnitude occurred later on Friday near the epicenter of that morning's tremor:

Friday, 7:14 PM, 2.5 km WNW of Chiayi, magnitude 4.5, depth 10.2 km. View data here.
(MT) Friday, May 26, 2000, 11:56 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - A rather small quake spread its vibrations across a large area of southern Taiwan this morning:

9:24 AM, 3.4 km east of Chiayi, magnitude 2.8, depth 14.1 km. View data here.
(MT) Wednesday, May 24, 2000, 9:03 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - There was one quake reported on Tuesday:

Tuesday, 3:36 PM, 28.1 km WNW of Yushan, magnitude 4.2, depth 18.3 km. View data here.
(MT) Sunday, May 21, 2000, 2:16 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Today's second quake occurred in nearly the same location as the first:

1:57 PM, 19.3 km southSSW of Taichung, magnitude 4.3, depth 13.3 km. View data here.
(MT) Sunday, May 21, 2000, 1:59 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - A tremor occurred very close to my location a short time ago:

1:28 AM, 19.9 km southSSW of Taichung, magnitude 4.7, depth 11.5 km. View data here.
(MT) Sunday, May 21, 2000, 12:49 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - A quake struck early Saturday evening, this time actually being in the vicinity of Sun Moon Lake:

Saturday 6:45 PM, 16.7 km east of Sun Moon Lake, magnitude 4.5, depth 27.4 km. View data here.
(MT) Friday, May 19, 2000, 11:57 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - Three more quakes have occurred within the past 20 hours:

Thursday 11:18 PM, 38.7 km ENE of Taichung, magnitude 5.0, depth 3.9 km. View data here.
Thursday 11:37 PM, 35.8 km NNE of Sun Moon Lake, magnitude 4.4, depth 3 km. View data here.
Today (Friday) 7:03 AM, 37.9 km NNE of Sun Moon Lake, magnitude 4.4, depth 2.6 km. View data here.

As I mentioned previously, while these tremors are being reported in relation to different locations, the epicenters are all quite close to the Kukuan/Wulai area in eastern Taichung County. A lot of mountains have lost their greenery in the landslides resulting from the recent spate of quakes. Thursday night's 5.0 magnitude quake was felt across approximately the northern two-thirds of Taiwan. While many of the people stranded by Wednesday's landslides have been rescued, there may be more injuries from the aforementioned quake.
(MT) Thursday, May 18, 2000, 4:36 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Another quake occurred this afternoon in the vicinity of yesterday afternoon's six tremors:

2:17 PM, 42.7 km SE of Miaoli, magnitude 4.2, depth 9.2 km. View data here.
(MT) Thursday, May 18, 2000, 9:13 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - At midnight this morning, news reports indicated at least 3 dead and 10 seriously injured so far as a result of yesterday's magnitude 5.0 quakes. Dozens of people were still trapped in mountainous areas due to landslides on and around the Central Cross-Island Highway. Kuo Wen-Kai, director of the Taiwan Central Weather Bureau's Seismology Center, explained that the seemingly long duration and intensity of yesterday's seismic activity was due to the overlapping periods of the first two quakes. A friend living on the sixth floor of a building in Changhua reported to me this morning that her building was banging against the adjacent structure during yesterday's quakes.

Question everything--especially this! I must again complain about the coverage of this story by so-called "professional" news organizations. By directly following the information published by the Central Weather Bureau, they have led the public to believe that the quakes were close to Sun Moon Lake, Taichung City, and Miaoli. If they had merely consulted a map and used a ruler, they would know that these places span a distance of over 75 kilometers (45 miles) while, in fact, the epicenters of all six of yesterday's quakes were within about 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) of each other near Kukuan and Wulai--both in eastern Taichung County.

Meanwhile, a quake occurred early this morning in Taitung County:

2:12 AM, 17.7 km NE of Taitung, magnitude 4.7, depth 23.5 km. View data here.
(MT) Wednesday, May 17, 2000, 2:30 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - At 1:38 PM, TVBS-N news reported one death and one injury from this morning's quakes. Several people are also trapped because of rockslides in the Kukuan area of central Taiwan.

(MT) Wednesday, May 17, 2000, 1:00 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - While atop a footbridge on Taichung Harbor Road taking photos for the Mondo Taiwan website, the bridge shook pretty noticeably for at least 15 seconds. Here's what I felt:

11:25 AM, 40.8 km NNE of Sun Moon Lake, magnitude 5.3, depth 3 km. View data here.

Inside downtown Taichung's First Commercial Bank, monitors displaying the currency exchange rates swung for several minutes, and people put their hands over their hearts. In Changhua, high school students on an athletic field were heard screaming in fear while the classroom walls were seen moving back and forth. The CWB has reported 5 more quakes. Although their epicenters are given relative to different locations, a look at the map will reveal that they occurred in almost exactly the same place:

11:27 AM, 44.4 km NNE of Sun Moon Lake, magnitude 5.2, depth 9.9 km. View data here.
11:29 AM, 46.6 km SE of Miaoli, magnitude 4.1, depth 7.8 km. View data here.
11:39 AM, 43.1 km ENE of Taichung, magnitude 4.1, depth 5.5 km. View data here.
12:15 PM, 40.4 km ENE of Taichung, magnitude 4.3, depth 9.7 km. View data here.
12:47 PM, 40.7 km ENE of Taichung, magnitude 4.3, depth 1.5 km. View data here.
(MT) Wednesday, May 10, 2000, 9:29 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - A tremor slipped past my attention yesterday afternoon:

Tuesday, 3:49 PM, 19 km WNW of Hualien, magnitude 4.5, depth 9.6 km. View data here.
(MT) Tuesday, May 9, 2000, 8:51 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - Two more quakes were reported by the CWB last night:

Monday, 7:53 PM, 11.6 km ESE of Kaohsiung, magnitude 4.6, depth 40 km. View data here.
Monday, 9:27 PM, 5.4 km WSW of Chiayi, magnitude 3.9, depth 11.6 km. View data here.
(MT) Monday, May 8, 2000, 9:01 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - A quake which was reported by the Taiwan Central Weather Bureau as not being felt in Taichung gave me a good shake early this morning. Another one reported as having a magnitude of 2 in Taichung City left a strong impression on many others I spoke with. Here are the details:

12:18 AM, 12 km ESE of Kaohsiung, magnitude 5.2, depth 37.5 km. View data here.
7:47 AM, 18.6 km southSSW of Taichung, magnitude 4.8, depth 7.7 km. View data here.
(MT) Sunday, May 7, 2000, 2:01 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Just after the announcement of a policy change that would supposedly increase the number of quake reports, four days passed without a single report. Here's a sizeable tremor which happened in Hualien County last night:

Saturday, 9:41 PM, 13.9 km NW of Hualien, magnitude 5.0, depth 17.3 km. View data here.
(MT) Tuesday, May 2, 2000, 4:07 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Two more quakes were reported in Hualien County this morning:

2:06 AM, 13.4 km WNW of Hualien, magnitude 4.4, depth 8.5 km. View data here.
10:18 AM, 21.9 km west of Hualien, magnitude 4.1, depth 3 km. View data here.

While it may seem like there has been an increase in the number of quakes recently, a policy change by the Taiwan Central Weather Bureau has resulted in the posting of more reports. It seems that some "regional" quakes (by which I imagine they mean those of significant magnitude which are felt over a smaller geographic area) are now being posted on their website. You can read the entire Taipei Times article on this subject here.
(MT) Sunday, April 30, 2000, 1:58 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - It's been a busy weekend! Five quakes have occurred since the last report:

Saturday, 3:22 AM, 9.2 km NNE of Chiayi, magnitude 4.2, depth 15.9 km. View data here.
Saturday, 3:46 PM, 49.2 km NNE of Sun Moon Lake, magnitude 4.5, depth 3 km. View data here.
Saturday, 5:35 PM, 6.3 km SSW of Chengkung, magnitude 4.7, depth 39.9 km. View data here.
Sunday, 9:19 AM, 28 km NE of Kaohsiung, magnitude 4.5, depth 33 km. View data here.

Additionally, 2 barrier lakes formed by landslides as a result of the 921 earthquake are in imminent danger of bursting. The threat has resulted in the evacuation of people on Chiufenerh Mountain. Recent landslides in central Taiwan have also stranded about 100 households in the Chungliao and Shuangtung areas. Read the entire Taipei Times article here.
(MT) Wednesday, April 26, 2000, 4:03 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Another quake has occurred since this morning's report. This time, it was in Chiayi County:

4:23 AM, 10.2 km southSSW (sic) of Yushan (Jade Mountain), magnitude 4.8, depth 3 km. View data here.
(MT) Thursday, April 20, 2000, 6:52 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - I went to see a film at the local arthouse cinema last night. It felt like someone was kicking my chair, but there was nobody sitting behind me. It was an earthquake that was felt across the northern two thirds of Taiwan:

Wednesday,10:04 PM, 39.1 km ENE of Taichung, magnitude 4.9, depth 3.7 km. View data here.
(MT) Tuesday, April 18, 2000, 3:23 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Light shaking in the east early this morning:

Wednesday (4/12), 5:58 AM, 12.3 km east of Chiayi, magnitude 4.1, depth 17.5 km. View data here.
Today (4/14), 9:36 AM, 22 km SE of Ilan, magnitude 5.1, depth 48.3 km. View data here.
(MT) Saturday, April 8, 2000, 11:13 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - A quake all the way on the other side of the island shook me this morning:

10:41 AM, 26.2 km WSW of Taitung, magnitude 5.1, depth 31.3 km. View data here.
(MT) Thursday, April 6, 2000, 3:57 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - Back from a short vacation, I find that there are 3 new quakes which have occurred:

Friday, March 31, 2000, 8:34 PM, 12.4 km NW of Tainan, magnitude 4.8, depth 15.7 km. View data here.
Sunday, April 2, 2000, 7:02 PM, 15.7 km ESE of Sun Moon Lake, magnitude 4.8, depth 15.5 km. View data here.
Monday, April 3, 2000, 10:43 AM, 17.6 km west of Sun Moon Lake, magnitude 4.3, depth 7.5 km. View data here.

The strange thing about the reports on Friday and Monday is that both are said to have been felt as magnitude 5 quakes away from the epicenter.
(MT) Tuesday, March 28, 2000, 12:05 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - Today's seismic activity:

4:14 PM, 27.4 km SW of Yushan, magnitude 4.7, depth 9 km. View data here.

This quake was felt from as far away as Taichung, Hualien, and Kaohsiung as having a magnitude of 1 on the Richter scale.
(MT) Friday, March 24, 2000, 11:55 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Two earthquakes occurred in the vicinity of northeastern Taiwan today:

8:40 PM, 31.2 km NNE of Hualien, magnitude 4.2, depth 20 km. View data here.
10:13 PM, 61.8 km SE of Ilan, magnitude 4.9, depth 50.2 km. View data here.

(MT) Friday, March 17, 2000, 1:57 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - More quakes tonight. As I was getting ready to finish class, several of the students shouted "Earthquake!" I was standing still and didn't feel a thing, but they all thought it was rather serious. This is what they felt:

9:10 PM Thursday, 28.4 km SW of Yushan (Jade Mountain), magnitude 5.3, depth 13.8 km. View data here.
12:05 AM Friday, 27.9 km SW of Yushan, magnitude 4.6, depth 15.7 km. View data here.

12: 49 AM, 17.1 km SE of Sun Moon Lake, magnitude 4.7, depth 22.9 km. View data here.
(MT) Friday, February 25, 2000, 2:44 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - A BIG quake struck off the northeastern coast of Taiwan this afternoon:

2:13 PM, 213.7 km ESE of Pengchiayu, magnitude 6.0, depth 112 km. View data here.

Despite its depth and location far offshore, it was felt in many parts of Taiwan.
(MT) Wednesday, February 23, 2000, 4:50 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Another quake struck southern Taiwan early this afternoon:

12:30 PM, 27.6 km SW of Yushan, magnitude 4.6, depth 15.5 km. View data here.
(MT) Wednesday, February 23, 2000, 5:10 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - A sizeable quake struck off the southeastern coast of Taiwan this morning:

(MT) Thursday, February 17, 2000, 4:18 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Almost everyone I talked to in Taichung City Wednesday was awakened by the early morning quake, but a Taipei Times report says there were no reports of damage or injuries. A report by the Central News Agency has a slightly more ominous tone, saying "that further aftershocks, measuring as high as 6 on the Richter scale, could very likely occur over the next few days, given the fact that 24 aftershocks were detected immediately after the two major jolts."

Yet another quake struck just north of Taichung early this morning:

3:48 AM, 25.5 km NNE of Taichung, magnitude 4.0, depth 7.4 km. View data here.
(MT) Wednesday, February 16, 2000, 12:47 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - A large quake struck near the border of Chiayi and Pingtung Counties early this morning followed by a smaller aftershock a couple of hours later:

8:06 AM, 20.5 km SSW of Alishan, magnitude 4.5, depth 13.4 km. View data here.

I may have felt the first quake and thought it was my imagination. The Central Weather Bureau says it was felt in Taichung as a magnitude-2 quake. No word (in English) on damage or injuries yet, but the newly-online Tomorrow Times has a report here (in Chinese Big-5 encoding). As usual, I'll update as I get more news.
(MT) Friday, February 11, 2000, 3:29 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Silly earthquake news? Composer/seismologist Andrew Michael has used earthquake vibrations to compose music. Read about it here.

I also wrote a piece of music (a sax quartet) in response to the 921 Taiwan earthquake. If you can hear music on the page you are currently viewing, you can check it out here.
(MT) Thursday, February 10, 2000, 4:41 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Seismic activity has struck in Hualien today:

12:33 PM, 12.5 km NW of Hualien, magnitude 4.1, depth 8 km. View data here.
(MT) Monday, February 7, 2000, 10:43 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - The Central Weather Bureau reports that two quakes struck Taiwan today:

7:10 PM, 8.2 km NNE of Alishan, magnitude 4.5, depth 9.8 km. View data here.
(MT) Sunday, February 6, 2000, 3:04 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - According to the February 4, 2000 edition of the English-language China Times, a quake measuring 4.8 struck near Ilan at 4:29 PM Thursday. Something's fishy with this report ("The first quake...," etc.). Read the article for yourself here, or see the Central Weather Bureau's data here. Don't know how I missed this one!
(MT) Friday, February 4, 2000, 4:35 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - A quake has struck the southeastern part of the island early this morning:

2:48 AM, 7.5 km NE of Taitung, magnitude 5.2, depth 21.1 km. View data here.
(MT) Tuesday, February 1, 2000, 6:17 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - Another quake struck near Taichung this morning causing my walls to make crumbling noises once again. Again, the Central Weather Bureau seemed to take some time getting the report online:

5:11 AM, 34 km NE of Taichung, magnitude 4.6, depth 4.2 km. View data here.
(MT) Monday, January 31, 2000, 3:45 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Today's early morning quake has finally been posted along with another quake which occurred much later:

4:21 AM, 21.2 km NE of Sun Moon Lake (about 30 km ESE of Taichung City), magnitude 4.8, depth 7.5 km. View data here.
10:57 AM, 6.1 km ENE of Chiayi, magnitude 4.2, depth 4.7 km. View data here.
(MT) Monday, January 31, 2000, 4:24 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - My concrete walls just shook and made crumbling noises. This one wasn't my imagination! So far, I've waited 20 minutes for a report from the Central Weather Bureau, but there's nothing. They usually have the reports posted on their website less than 15 minutes after a quake's occurrence, but perhaps this one was too small to be posted while being very near--enough for me to feel it.
(MT) Saturday, January 29, 2000, 11:32 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - After a nearly week-long respite from seismic activity, the latest seismic activity appeared in Tainan County:

Friday, 2:42 PM, 22 km northNNE (sic) of Tainan, magnitude 4.1, depth 7.9 km. View data here.

I didn't see this info posted last night when I checked the Taiwan Central Weather Bureau's website.
(MT) Sunday, January 23, 2000, 9:17 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Around 8:45 this evening, I got a call from a friend in Taichung City asking if I had just felt a big quake. It was quite a surprise because I hadn't felt a thing. I checked the Taiwan Central Weather Bureau's site only to find that a quake of "0" magnitude had occurred at 8:00 AM "999 km northNNE of Taipei" at a depth of "0" km. Something's rotten in Danmai, if you ask me. I'll update this info as soon as the CWB does! Stop the presses! They've fixed it. Here's the info:

8:42 PM, 25.2 km SSE of Chiayi, magnitude 4.8, depth 9.2 km. View data here.

Regarding Friday morning's 5.0 quake in Hualien County, it was mentioned in at least one of Friday evening's Chinese-language newspapers, but the person who told me about this didn't read of any damage or injuries.
(MT) Friday, January 21, 2000, 3:50 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Another tremor hit Hualien County this morning, this one smaller and deeper underground:

9:36 AM, 21.8 km WNW of Hualien, magnitude 4.5, depth 7.6 km. View data here.

I don't have any details on this morning's earlier 5.0 quake yet.
(MT) Friday, January 21, 2000, 5:36 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - Six minutes shy of four months after the 921 quake, another large and shallow tremor hit southern Hualien County early this morning:

1:41 AM, 38.9 km east of Yushan (Jade Mountain), magnitude 5.0, depth 1 km. View data here.

I will post more details as they become available.
(MT) Monday, January 17, 2000, 4:55 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - The day has already brought two reports of seismic activity:

4:22 AM, 40 km NE of Taichung, magnitude 4.7, depth 3.8 km. View data here.
4:39 AM, 39.8 km NE of Taichung, magnitude 4.3, depth 2.5 km. View data here.
(MT) Saturday, January 15, 2000, 8:10 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - This news hot off my telephone, in the town of Shihkang which was heavily hit by last September's earthquake, stores with "921" in their names are springing up: 921 Fried Chicken, etc. My guess would be that this will provide some sort of supernatural defense against future harm from quakes, but I'll update this info when I find something more solid.

Here's today's seismic activity report:

7:05 PM, 15 km SSW of Yushan (Jade Mountain), magnitude 4.7, depth 1 km. View data here.
(MT) Wednesday, January 12, 2000, 4:31 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Today's seismic activity (so far) as reported by the Taiwan Central Weather Bureau:

1:47 PM, 44.6 km ENE of Taichung, magnitude 4.5, depth 13.9 km. View data here.
(MT) Tuesday, January 11, 2000, 9:23 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - A tremor occurred in Tainan County this afternoon:

4:23 PM, 28.4 km NNW of Tainan, magnitude 4.3, depth 1 km. View data here.
(MT) Monday, January 10, 2000, 12:45 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - Another tremor struck Sunday evening:

Sunday, 8:06 PM, 21 km east of Sun Moon Lake, magnitude 4.6, depth 12.1 km. View data here.
(MT) Sunday, January 9, 2000, 5:41 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - Another tremor struck the island this morning, this time in Miaoli County:

2:27 AM, 38 km southSSW of Chubei, magnitude 4.4, depth 2.1 km. View data here.
(MT) Thursday, January 6, 2000, 10:27 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - Two more quakes hit near Sun Moon Lake just 4 minutes and 7 seconds apart:

7:21 AM, 14.4 km SSE of Sun Moon Lake, magnitude 4.8, depth 23.2 km. View data here.
(MT) Tuesday, January 4, 2000, 3:56 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Another quake hit in Hualien County today:

6:58 AM, 21.4 km NW of Hualien, magnitude 4.5, depth 14 km. View data here.
(MT) Monday, January 3, 2000, 3:27 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Today's is the third quake in as many days. This one was offshore and occurred deep under the ground:

10:20 AM, 67.4 km ESE of Taitung County's Chengkung, magnitude 4.9, depth 32.7 km. View data here.
(MT) Saturday, January 1, 2000, 7:58 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Happy New Year! No specific Y2K problems have come up, but 2 quakes--both smaller than the magnitude 4.0 or greater normally posted--were reported today:

1:49 AM, 13.7 km NE of Sun Moon Lake, magnitude 3.9, depth 9.8 km. View data here.
9:53 AM, 15.1 km SSE of Taichung, magnitude 3.7, depth 11.8 km. View data here.

On CNN's website, there was a report today titled "Data from recent quakes shaking up seismologists." It provides little insight into the questions it poses on why there were so many discrepancies in the data collected from various sources (global positioning satellites, radar data from European satellites, and digital seismograph networks) in the recent Taiwan, Turkey, and southern California earthquakes. Read the entire article for yourself here.
(MT) Friday, December 31, 1999, 1:32 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - A friend who lives in Taichung City woke me up today telling me he felt a quake this morning that caused his walls to shake. Here are the stats:

8:39 AM, 14.9 km NE of Alishan, magnitude 4.5, depth 8.2 km. View data here.
(MT) Friday, December 31, 1999, 4:00 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - A sizeable aftershock struck off the coast of Taitung on Thursday night:

8:24 PM Thursday, 23.2 km ESE of Taitung, magnitude 4.9, depth 20.2 km. View data here.
(MT) Tuesday, December 28, 1999, 12:09 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - Two more aftershocks hit Taiwan on Monday:

9:21 AM Monday, 17.3 km NNE of Yushan (Jade Mountain), magnitude 4.4, depth 3.4 km. View data here.
2:11 PM Monday, 12.3 km NE of Chiayi, magnitude 4.2, depth 13.7 km. View data here.

(MT) Monday, December 20, 1999, 1:18 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - Just as I was getting ready to put an unofficial end to Mondo Earthquake (I had already typed up a report before my power went off), the Central Weather Bureau reported this:

7:54 PM Sunday, 44.6 km NE of Sun Moon Lake, magnitude 4.5, depth 10.7 km. View data here.

While most of the imminent danger seems to have passed, the temperature has dropped drastically, it has been raining for about 3 days, and the wind is getting pretty strong--enough to knock out the power and phone service to my neighborhood for a couple of hours earlier tonight. I sincerely hope that everyone will be able to find shelter from the elements.

As reported in today's Taipei Times, the effects of the 921 earthquake have manifested themselves in another strange way. Taiwan's crops have suffered in various ways. Some have shown stunted growth, others have had abnormal color changes, and yet others have matured earlier than usual. Unfortunately, this article is not available online.

Mondo Taiwan--The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly! Social criticism, serious and otherwise, from a big-nosed, blue-eyed devil who's lived in Taiwan for over 20% of his life.

Welcome to my NOT-IN-IT-FOR-THE-MONEY page. Unlike many other Taiwan web pages, I don't want to hide the bad stuff, but I DO want to talk about some good stuff, too. I hope to share my ideas with people living in Taiwan and elsewhere, so I hope to make this page accessible to readers of both English and Chinese. (I'll need help with the Chinese part!) Take a look at the links below, and decide if you'd like to come in. You don't have to take off your shoes, but you can if you want to!
