Distant Lovers
Everyday we memorize the
mysterious tracts that
separate you and me,
and discipline the distance
that lies remote between us.
Our heartbeats pulse to a
vaguely remembered symphony
from a time when angels
were bright and the stars sang.
In the silence of our most
personal thoughts we renew
vows of commitment to one
another, and in the vicinity
of love we grasp at halved-selves
that never knew a whole.
And even though we may never meet,
we remain one,
two halves of a relevant whole.
