State approval of a cadet program for EMT students at Mohawk Trail Regional High School is being sought. With approval, this would allow students to take the state EMT exam at the age of 16 1/2. Then go on emergency calls during school hours within a 3 mile radius of the high school.

The waiver request has been sent to Boston for approval and students in this class should be able to take the state exam in May of 1999.

Students in this class would be given pocket pagers and expected to leave classes and provide basic first aid to a patient while waiting for the ambulance to arrive. Students may be asked to ride along with the patient to the hospital and finish the care that they started. This will help with the improvement of patient care within the golden hour when needed.

Students will be responding to scenes in Shelburne Falls, Charlemont, Buckland, Colrain, and Ashfield. The will have to work with 3 different ambulance services including Shelburne Falls Ambulance, Colrain Ambulance, and Charlemont Ambulance.

The class at Mohawk is currently working on a cliff rescue and an auto extrication.

Cliff Rescue

Auto Extrication: A used car that has been damaged by an accident has been donated to Mohawk High School Cadet program. On Tuesday and Wednesday May 25 and 26 the students will be learning how to use the jaws of life. While they take apart the car. The auto extrication was a great learning experience for the whole group of kids that were there. To view some pictures click here
