...Background, (I know you are aware of all this):
A handwritten Hanson Family Record manuscript by Alfonso B. Hanson says: "George Hanson - Emigrated to the Colonies from England - via Ireland - was twice married. First to ------- by whom he had three children. Second to Margaret Mozingo by whom there (were) eight children. No record of the termination of the first marriage or the children but from the second marriage the children are as follows: William, James, Moses (Served in Revolutionary Army), Jesse, Joseph, Jeremiah (Died in North Carolina), and Elijah."

On 26 May 1741, George Hinson of Washington Parish was presented in Westmoreland County Court for living in adultery with Margaret MOZINGO, the wife of Francis Chandler. ... This Court Record, speaking of George HINSON of Washington Parish, of Westmoreland Co., VA, is the only provable location information I have concerning "my" George HINSON.

Finally, in October 1772, Court records of Dobbs Inferior Court (Dobbs Co., NC) declared that George HINSON, a very poor aged infirm man, be exempted from paying Public Taxes & doing Public Duties.

At the same time, there was a John MOZINGO with the same plea.

Comment:
I have not been able to PROVE that George HINSON, the subject of the October 1772 court ruling in Olde Dobbs Co., NC was indeed the husband/ consort of Margaret MOZINGO in Virginia. Evidence or proof of the fact or motivation of George's movement to NC would help.

Neither have I been able to PROVE that Dobbs Co., NC residents William, James, Moses, Jesse, Joseph, Jeremiah, and Elijah HINSON were brothers and the sons of George HINSON and Margaret MOZINGO.

Theory:
I'm postulating that George HINSON and his wife, Margaret MOZINGO, moved to Olde Dobbs Co., North Carolina with their seven sons: William, James, Moses, Jesse, Joseph, Jeremiah, and Elijah.
Motivation was to escape prosecution of the Westmoreland Co. adultery charge (see Background above). This was probably the "running away" referenced in the 27 February 1741/2 court ruling - see Background, above. Additional motivation may have been to join or rejoin Margaret MOZINGO's family. This family might be John MOZINGO and his wife Ann - OR- a (presumably older) relative named Elizabeth MOZINGO.

Evidence supporting Theory:
1 - Old Dobbs Co., NC land transactions, starting on 3 Jan 1767, wherein James HINSON, son of George HINSON who married Margaret MOZINGO, was deeded land from Elizabeth MOZINGO.

2- Subsequent land transactions, census, and voting records, all in Olde Dobbs Co. (or the counties formed from Olde Dobbs Co.) for the HINSON sons.
William - 1790 census and 1800 voting list
James - land transactions 1767-1798, 1786 tax & voter lists, 1790
census
Moses - 1769 & 1780 tax records, 1777-1779 land transactions,
1790 census
Jesse - 1769, 1780, 1782 tax lists, 1784-1789 land transactions,
1790 census, 1800 voting list
Joseph - 1769, 1780 tax lists, 1777-1779 land transactions, 1790
census
Jeremiah - misc records 1767-1773, land transactions 1777-1779
and 1784-1789, 1780 tax lists
Elijah - 1779-1789 land transactions, 1778-1779 served in Rev.
War from NC, 1790 & 1800 census...

4 - The HINSON/HANSON DNA research is starting to pay off a little. We have found that traceable descendants of Elijah HINSON and Jesse HINSON (See Background above) have very close matching DNA. This proves a close common male ancestor between Jesse and Elijah. This supports the theory that Elijah & Jesse were brothers.

Discussion and Questions:
1 - Apparently George HINSON and Margaret MOZINGO did not acquire land themselves (or the records are not available) and probably lived with or on the land of one or more of George HINSON's sons or Margaret MOZINGO's relatives....

Notes for Margaret MOZINGO:

No surviving document gives the name of John and Elizabeth Mozingo's children. Their family is reconstructed by the process of elimination. All the Mozingo's in that time period who weren't named in Edward's will are assigned to John. Not very scientific I realize but it's the best we can do with the information we have. Edward II's will states that he had a daughter named Margaret but I believe that his brother John Mozingo did also. It is John's daughter that married Francis Chandler and later George Hinson.

George and Margaret (Mozingo) Henson would have married sometime between July 29, 1741 and Nov. 10, 1753. These dates are based on two Westmoreland Co, VA records and Edward Mozingo's will.

29 July 1741 p.115a George Hinson of Washington parish being presented by the Grand Jury for living in adultery with Margaret Chandler a Mulatto the wife of Francis Chandler within Six months then last past The said Geo. Hinson now appearing by William Kennon his attorney on whose motion an imparlance is granted him til next Court

The presentment of the Grand Jury at May Court Last against Francis Chandler and Rebecca Payn of the parish of Cople for Cohabitting together within Six months last past is Dismist No Crime being Charged in the presentment.

Clearly Francis and Margaret (Mozingo) Chandler were still married at this point even though they had both moved on to other relationships.

1753 Nov 10 Richmond County. Edward MOZINGO wrote his will in Lunenburg Parish. He named his son John, Edward and George; daughters Sarah CHANDLER and Margaret and daughter-in-law Hannah. Witnesses included Robert HALL, Daniel MILNER, and Susannah Newman MOSESS. Also mentioned "... George Henson and Margaret his wife..." The will was probated on 1 April 1754 (Will Book 6, p. 20).

George and Margaret Henson were mentioned in Edward's will. And he specifically stated that Margaret was George's wife. So there is no doubt that by the time Edward Mozingo wrote his will George and Margaret Henson were all ready married. I don't know what the divorce laws in VA at that time were or where you would look to find them. But it appears that Margaret and Francis either divorced or he died and leaving Margaret free to remarry.

In his will Edward Mozingo named his children. He called his married daughter Sarah by her full married name - Sarah Chandler. In contrast neither his daughter Margaret nor daughter-in-law Hannah had a last name given. This inconsistancy on Edward's part leads me to believe that Margaret's surname at the time his will was written was Mozingo like her sister-in-law's. If Margaret Henson had been the daughter of Edward Mozingo I would think that she would be handled in his will like her sister Sarah and given her full married name - Margaret Henson. Therefore I believe that there were two Margaret Mozingo's in that time period and that Margaret Mozingo Chandler Henson was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Mozingo.

Trying to verify the George Hanson and Margaret Mozingo (Chandler)
Hanson linkage to my family. Long line of Quakers -
Son - Elijah Hanson (North Carolina)
Son - Borden Hanson (NC)
Son - Levi Hanson (Ohio)
Son - Zimri Hanson (Indiana)
Daughter - Elva Ruth Hanson (Indiana)
(My Grandmother)

I have been checking various websites and different histories and
Iwould like to ultimately trace Margaret and George lineage on back if
possible. I have hit deadends before in my research on other lines.

Thanks,
Rick
