Obituary of Martha Ann Monzingo written by S. S. Scott, Minden LA
Mrs. Martha Ann Monzingo, consort of W. W. Barrington, and daughter of Giles and Rose Monzingo, died in Minden, Claiborne Parish, LA, November 24, 1860. She was born in Houston Co., GA, August 30, 1831; joined the Methodist Episcopal Church in early life, and lived a consistent and useful member of the same. Although naturally timid, she never shrank from known duty. When penitents wept about the altar, she was found there to comfort with her words, songs and prayers. She was an affectionate companion, a devoted mother, and a warm friend. Numerous friends and relatives, with her companion and five little children, now mourn her loss. But the invaluable legacy that she has left to them: a spotless character, a model Christian life, and the full assurance of a home in Heaven. During her illness, she was asked if she was ready if God should call. She promptly responded that she was. As dissolution drew near, she asked for singing and prayers. They sang "Happy Day, When Jesus Washed My Sins Away", it being her choice, and in which she participated for a short time, but soon changed her song to praises, and then the Lord took her to himself.
