A Special Occasion: Mother of the Bride?
This dress makes me feel so pretty, even though it's too short (my slip shows!). The shoes are white satin--bridal pumps, really. When I worked in a shoe store years ago, I sold many of them, just like these. A few times, during a lull, I slipped down to the basement stockroom, hurriedly took off my sturdy black oxfords, my socks, and tried on pumps like
these--oh so quickly, for at any minute a salesman might come
bounding down the stairs in search of a missing size.
Years later, I saw them--the identical shoe, I could swear--on the
rack at K-mart, marked down to five dollars. And my size! I felt
that surely I was intended to buy them, and of course I did, even
though I could think of no occasion for wearing them, no outfit
they would go with.
The dress, well, I found it in
my daughter's closet. The beaded purse was actually a present
from my loving (and sometimes understanding) partner,
though I've never worn the dress in her company.
