I was lucky enough to make a bit of money in late '98/early '99 doing commissioned portraits. One was in black and white pointilism, a very painstaking process I use when I'm feeling masochistic.

Original Drawings

Synthia To create this animated GIF, I did 12 drawings on paper with pencil and ink, starting with her head facing me, then to the left, back, and right, then doing the in-between work. A small cross in the corner of each image helped for registration (making sure the drawings could be placed precisely over one another). I scanned each into the computer, adjusted the brightness and contrast, trimmed each image from the registration mark out, used Adobe PhotoDeluxe's canvas size function to get them all the same size, then coloured them in. I batch converted them to GIF 89a format and set the background colour for every frame, then simply imported each one into GIF animation software.The whole process spanned 2000/04/13 to 2000/06/04, the vast majority of time being spent on the actual drawing.
