The Great Corporate Media Boycott

This page was last modified May 12, 2001.

On February 19, I began to boycott the corporate entertainment media. It's sort of a protest, and it's also sort of a self-purifying process. I haven't cut myself off completely. I still go to independant E-zines, and watch the news, but I don't watch MTV, or read entertainment magazines unless they're independant mags. Mainstream media censors independant entertainment because they don't gain anything from those obscure artists gaining attention and selling records. They make their money from major record labels paying them to pay attention to their artists. The cycle is complete when the consumer buys records by major label artists, and never hears about independant label artists. I am against that system, so I'm removing myself from it. Without the consumer, where is the money gonna come from? Now, I am a realist, and I know I'm not even close to bringing down that system, but another goal I have is to make an example for my peers to follow. I don't expect everyone to be as extreme as me, but I do expect them to expand themselves and realize that MTV does not dictate what is cool. The consumers dictate what is cool, and the media should yield to us.

Update!-Well folks, it's been almost 3 months without MTV or entertainment magazines, and I'm still alive. For those of you who are wondering just how I've survived for the past 3 months, I'll tell you. Internet radio. It is truly the greatest thing the internet can provide. My favorite site is This is Corrosion. It's not just gothic stuff, despite what the name suggests. It's very diverse, which is probably why I like it so much. They play techno, but it's not the annoying rave kind. They play what's good. Some of the bands are popular, others I've never heard of, but I like most of the stuff. I'm not too wild about some of the older stuff like Siouxsie, but that's part of the diversity. Anyway, check it out.
