He got back on his bike and drove away as Ashley put the things away and went inside.
“Ashley! I said wash the car.” Her mom said walking into the kitchen to make dinner. Ashley smirked and
marched off into her room to change.
At dinner everyone sat around the table. Ashley, Mom, Dad, and her older sister Jessica.
“Mom, when do I get the money?” Ashley asked taking a sip of her water.
“Money for what?” Jessica said sarcastically.
“For being so cute, unlike you. No, for washing the car. Mom said I would get $10 for washing the car.”
“Oh really?”
“Yes.”
“Well, Ashley, I’ll have to go down to the bank. So, tomorrow.” Her mom replied.
“Alright.”
“Oh, Ashley. That reminds me, can I barrow your pink shirt tomorrow?”
“Why?”
“Because I have a great job interview.”
“Sure, what is it for?”
“I might be working over at that new music store where they sell all those guitars and stuff.”
“Cool.”
“Isn’t that up in Salt Lake?” Her dad spoke up.
“Yeah.”
“Well, I hope you get it. I hear a lot of people, famous people, go there.” Her mom said.
“Yeah, I really wanna get that job. I mean, the famous people leave tips, big ones. To what I hear. And they
pay $10 an hour.”
“Well, what are we doing tonight?” Ashley interrupted as she was finished with her meal.
“Well, I was thinking we could just stay home tonight.” He mom replied.
“Oh, ok. I’m going to play Nintendo in my room.” She said taking her plate and walking over to the sink and
washing it.
“Ok.” Her dad replied and Ashley went to her room. She closed her door and sat down on the floor in front of
her TV. It was Friday night so she could stay up as long as she wanted. She turned on the TV and took out
her race car game. She started it and the phone rand. She quickly picked it up.
“Hello.”
“Madeline, here we go ‘round again.” the lyrics from Hanson’s song "Madeline" carried through the phone.
“Hi, Josh.” Ashley said as she played her game.
“How did you know it was me?”
“Lucky guess.”
Josh laughed.
“You wanna do something tonight?”
“I can’t. My mom wants us to stay home.”
“Oh. So what are you doing?”
“Nothing really. Just playing Nintendo. What about you?”
“Playing on my guitar.”
“Cool.”
“Hey, guess what.”
“What?”
“Sarah got her ears pierced.”
“How do you know?”
“She absent-mindedly called me instead of you so she told me and then said not to tell you. . . oops.”
“Ha, ha, ha!” She laughed and the beep for call waiting went off.
“I bet that’s her.” Josh laughed
“Yeah, hang on.”
She switched lines
“Hello”
“Ashley, guess what?” It was Sarah.
“What?”
“I got my ears pierced.”
“Cool.”
“Yeah, I got them today.”
“Cool.”
“So what’s up?”
“Just talking to you and Josh and playing nintendo.”
“Fun.”
“Yeah. Hey, I need to go, I’ll call you back tomorrow ok?”
“Alright. Bye.”
“Bye.”
She hung up and switched lines.
“Ok, I’m back.”
“Alright, was it her?”
“Yeah.”
“I told you.”
“Yep, she got them today.”
“Hey, Ashley?”
“Yeah.”
“I need to go, my sister needs the phone. I’ll call ya later, ok?”
“Alright.”
“Bye”
“Bye”
Ashley hung up and continued to play her game.
At 11:00 her mom opened her bedroom door.
“Ashley, time for bed.”
“Ok.” Her mom left and Ashley turned off her game. She stood up and took out her white cotton shorts with
little daisy prints and white tee shirt and got dressed for bed. Then jumped into her soft worm bed. She
shut off the lights and changed the channel to one of her favorite late night TV shows, “Married With
Children”. After watching for 30 minutes, she quietly drifted off to sleep.
