Her first name appears as "Martha," "Elizabeth" and "Mary" in different sources. Some list her father as Robert Potter. C. E. Potter gives some details about this Robert Potter, but never mentions Henry Knowles or a daughter named "Martha," Elizabeth" or "Mary." The C. E. Potter source is often cited, but appears to have some mistakes in it.
C. E. Potter, Genealogies of the Potter Families 10, "Robert Potter, of Warwick, R.I., and his Descendants" (1888): 1.
Bolton's "Henry Knowles of Rhode Island" (1934): 30:
"His wife, whose name has not been found, was living when he made his wil, and may have been a daughter of Robert POTTER of Warwick."
Some projects list Robert Potter as married firstly to Isabel Tripp and secondly to Sarah. Others list him married to Isobel Anthony. Dates and children are borrowed haphazardly from each version which creates a great confusion of information on the Internet. Even more confusion arises when older secondary sources appear to be wrong. Most versions end in Warwick, Rhode Island, in the 1650s. "Robert Potter" is still a common enough name that one might assume that overzealous genealogists have mixed and matched information about two different Robert Potters. Instead of trying to sort out this mess and take sides with one version over another, I have decided to keep the matter of Henry Knowles's wife's father moot.
