"This is the genealogy of the Harmon families that came
from England to the USA - mainly settled in the New England area. The earliest
Harmons are from the early 1600's, there were several different branches: The
Scarboro, Maine Branch; The Saco and York, Maine Branches; The Springfield, Massachusetts
Branch; The Braintree, Mass. Branch; Harmons of Maryland; then there are lists
of Harmons in the Revolution; Harmons in the Mass. Militia in the War of 1812;
Harmons in the Aroostook War in Maine, in 1839; Connecticut Harmons in the
Revolution; Vermont Harmons in the Revolution; and some Misc. Harmon families.
The Scarboro, Maine branch starts with John HARMON, the first, b. prob. 1650;
m. 1677 to Sarah ROBERTS of Oyster River, NH.
The Saco and York, ME branches starts with: James HARMON, the first, of Saco,
ME; b.prob. in England; came to this country when Saco was first settled. He
married Sarah CLARKE on May 6,1658.
The Springfield, Mass. Branch starts with: John HARMON, the 1st, b.in England
in 1617; d. March 3,1661 in Springfiled, Mass. He married Elizabeth (she was b.
in England 1617) in 1640.
The Braintree, Mass. Branch starts with: Nathaniel HARMON, b.prob in England;
m.ca. 1638 to Mary BLISS. She was bapt. in England 16 March 1616/17 and she was
21 yrs old when her father came to America.
The Maryland Branch starts with: George HARMON who married Rose Anna ____. He
was in the Rev. War."
There have been attempts to link John Harmon either with Nathaniel Harmon and Mary Bliss or James Harmon and Sarah Clarke. Either is possible, but the conjecture is a stretch of the facts. Obviously if John Harmon was born in Massachusetts, his parents had to be living in that area and there ought to be some record of them. Then again, I follow the traditional version that his parents are unknown.
There is an interesting drama surrounding John Harmon's first son, John Jr., who died when he was only 21 years old. His wife, Lydia Fernald, was accused in court of having an illegitimate baby, even though the father was no doubt John Jr. who had died before the baby was born.
