INDEX

There seem to be
more than one Andrew Haley in New England. The Andrew Haley (often described as
born in 1629) of the Isle of Shoals is often mentioned as the one who married
Deborah Wilson (despite the age difference and other problems). This is
supported by most genealogists, although some attempt a theory that the Andrew
Haley who married Deborah Wilson was the son of this "Isles of
Shoals" Andrew.
First son Andrew (born ca1667 or, according to some, 15 JUL 1660), who married Elizabeth (Scammon)
Haley (born 22 APR 1677) on 5 JUL 1697
in Kittery, sheds some light on the matter with mention of his father Andrew
Haley at the beginning of his otherwise lengthy will:
"In the Name of God, Amen the eighth day of April AnnoDomini one thousand seven hundred twenty & five I AndrewHaley of Kittery in the County of York... yeoman... do make& ordain this my Last will & Testament... I give to my wellbeloved Son Andrew Haley all that my land that Lye betweenJoseph Wilson's Land & Samll Skilling's Land Lying inKittery in Spruce Creek wch Land was formerly my FathersAndrew Haly deceased [...]"
This text comes from the project of Jean Hutchens (link below):
"The Andrew Haley before mentioned is called the first settler from Ireland on the Isles of Shoals [a group of small islands six miles off the coast from Rye, New Hampshire]. With the three Kelly brothers elsewhere referred to, he settled on Smuttynose Island in the year 1653, and he and his descendants long occupied this island, which is now called Haleys Island. We are told he was extensively engaged in the fisheries at the Isles of Shoals, where he settled at an early colonial day and for him Haleys Island was named. He seems to have been a man of wealth and social standing and was known as King of the Shoals. A seawall was built by him to connect two islands and improve his harbor (Saco Valley Families and Settlements, by Rev. Gideon T. Ridlon, 706; and Genealogical and Family History of the State of Maine, by Dr. George T. Little, 32), described as the only secure harbor on these islands (Collections, Massachusetts Historical Society, Year 1800, 33). In 1662, he bought lands at York, Maine, which passed to his son, Andrew, and in1694 and 1697 the latter was recorded as the patentee of certain lands in York County, and the will of Andrew Haley (2), dated April 8, 1725, indicates him to have been a man of considerable wealth for the time. He left a long line of descendants; the name, Haley, is found in profusion in New England down to the present day, and a local chronicler states that descendants of the original Andrew Haley have lived on Haleys Island for 250 years."
Hutchens puts this "Isles of Shoals" Andrew's birth at ca1641 and claims, like others, that his parents were Thomas Haley and Mary West (contradicting the above information that Andrew was the first settler from Ireland). She was the daughter of John West, born 1588 in England, came to America in 1635 on the ship "The Speedwell", landing at Salem MA. He, and his wife Edith, and two known daughters settled in Saco ME in 1637, and moved to Wells ME in 1639, where he was a planter. Edith died c.1661, and John died in 1663 in Wells ME.
