From Robert Kline's Website (link below):
"The gravestone [plot 89, Arlington St, Watertown,
Massachusetts] is barely legible, being marble and highly corroded. There are
traces of what might have been paint on some of the lettering (in 1994), but
only on William's (the upper) half of the stone.
This stone was evidently erected about 1850 by Lemuel Shattuck."
From "A Shattuck Lineage," The American Genealogist (1939): 148 (also at link below):
"SERGEANT JOHN SHATTUCK, born in Watertown,
Massachusetts, February 11, 1647. In 1664 he had lands granted him at Groton,
Massachusetts, but retained his residence in Watertown. In 1675 when the Indian
conflict known as King Phillip's War broke out a military company was
organized, with Richard Beers as Captain and John Shattuck as Sergeant, and
this military service of their ancestor renders eligible his descendants to
membership in the Society of Colonial Wars or the
Society of Colonial Dames.
"John Shattuck was drowned [age 28], while crossing the
Charlestown Ferry, September 14, 1675.
"When he was only seventeen years old, June 20, 1664, he married Ruth Whitney. She was born in Watertown, April 15, 1645, and was, therefore, nineteen at the time of her marriage."
