James was the first of his line to come to America. The family nameappears under various spellings, including: Badcock and Bodcocke. James was listed as a blacksmith in Portsmouth, Rhode Island and was admitted as an inhabitant in 1642. On 5 OCT 1643, at a town meeting, he was one of two charged to see that the arms were in good repair. He was also granted 10 acres of land at first brook. He was admitted as a Freeman of Newport in 1655 and was chosen Commissioner 1656-58 and 1659. On 10 DEC 1657, he was granted 10 acres. On the 22 MAR 1660/61, he joined in the Articles of Agreement for the purchase of Misquamicut (Westerly), RI. On the 22 FEB 1661/62, he agreed to go with others to Misquamicut and to be there till November next. He was granted five pounds for that. He settled on the Connecticut side of the Pawtucket river, half-way between Westerly and Watch Hill. On 10 FEB 1664/65, he was brought before the Council at Hartford because of a complaint lodged by the Pawcatuck Indians, who claimed he and other inhabitants of Westerly were demanding rent from them and threatened to drive the Indians from the land. In 1667, he and others claimed land on the Pawtucket River. The Pequot Indians appealed to the Governor of Connecticut to settle these matters. He was received as a member of the Seventh Day Baptist Church of Newport and Westerly on 2 MAR 1678.
