Attended North Yarmouth Academy. Enlisted at 19 years of age into the 20th Maine Infantry under Col. Joshua Chamberlain. Fought at Antietam, Fredricksburg, and the Battle of Little Round Top, one of the skirmishes of the Battle of Gettysburg. He was at the Courthouse in Appomattox when General Lee surrendered, and describes much of his experiences in letters home. He entered service as a private and left as a sergeant. Traveled around the country after the war. Settled in Michigan in 1870. Became a Methodist Episcopal minister in 1878.
