INDEX
wager2976
He was a Quaker who apparently moved around a lot in New England, from Boston, to Maine, to Rhode Island, and to Connecticut. Various sources give contradictory information about him, although it is generally the same. He came to Boston with his father and four brothers on the ship "Lyon" in February, 1631. A hurricane took the life of one of his brothers. As a fisherman, he must have spent much of his time at sea and living rather nomadically. He was also known as Sgt. George Way. He finally married Elizabeth Smith, although there is record that she was punished for not living with him. His father-in-law describes him as "rude and lewd man in his life" in his will. If you do the math, he was forty when he married 24-year-old Elizabeth.
Mary Wheeler's Website (link below) has detailed the many different sources which mention George Way, including the following:
Gov. John Winthrop's Journal
William Richard Cutter, Genealogical & Family History of the State of Connecticut IV (Orig. publ. NY, 1911; repr. by Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, 1997).
Harry Abel Way II, The Connecticut Way Family, Being the Descendants of Sgt. George Way of Maine & Providence (Decorah, IA: 1989).
Frances Manwaring Caulkins, History of New London, Connecticut (New London, 1895).
