INDEX
wager480
The name "Harker" derives from a place name - Harkerside Place,
south-west of Reeth, on the other side of the river (Swale), and west of
Grinton. This farm is the survivor of a "linear" Medieval settlement
as described in Fleming (1998:110). Above the valley, Harkerside Moor is
scattered with old lead mine workings. "In the Middle Ages this place was
called Herthay ('the deer enclosure'); the name was later corrupted to Hercay
and Harka."
