John Varnum was the first white child born in the Merrimac Valley. Indian squaws assisted his mother at his birth and there was great rejoicing over the little "white papoose." He accumulated much property, owned a mill at Pawtucket Falls and various parcels of land in the vicinity. He was the first town clerk of Dracut (1702-13), having earlier recorded his own marriage in 1700. He died without a will, but an inventory made on the 8th of March 1714/15 (filed at East Cambridge) estimated his landed estates at 517 pounds, 10 shillings, and his personal estate at 111 pounds, 18 shillings. First daughter Hannah died a teenager three months after his death, while youngest daughter Dorothy was born six months after his death.
