Music Theory Projects - Beginning Ideas

COMPOSITION GUIDE - ROUGH Draft DUE 3/17!

Every composition should have:

1)Clear, legible, and ALIGNED notation
2) Title and tempo marking (use a metronome)
3) Dynamic markings and articulations
4) Meter on first staff only
5) Measure numbers (by 5's)
6) Use a ruler for straight bar lines
7) Clef and key signatures on every line


Level I
  • write a melody (to fit a given harmony?)
  • 8 to 16 bars in length
  • transpose to 2 related keys
Level II
  • write a melody
  • add simple harmony
  • use block chords with bass and arppegio accompaniment
  • transpose to 2 to 3 keys
Level III
  • Full Composition
  • free form accompaniment and figured bass
  • modulate to at least 1 key
