what is this so-called trl? TRL (originally known as Total Request Live) is currently the staple of MTV and the only show where the viewers have total control over what videos get played live on the air each day to make the daily top 10 countdown. Your phone votes and e-mail requests determine what makes it on. Fans are a very very important element of the show, they're out in Times Square screaming on the top of their lungs and in the studio soaking in the reality that is TRL. The show has had a big impact on the music industry by incorporating actual fans and giving them a open chance to be heard about what they like. )) trl history Back in the Spring of 1998, MTV Live was the popular show on the network, with celebrity guests, videos, and a whole lot more. At this same time MTV sought out to fill a vacant slot on their late night schedule, many ideas came up however one show in particular, Total Request a simple show counting down 10 videos with e-mail requests and totals, was the popular pick. Carson Daly (who was a new VJ at the time) hosted the show in a dark room with monitors and that's how the basic structure of TRL began. Total Request was taken to Summer Share in Seaside Heights for the summer of 98, the show did extremely well and the producers at MTV wanted to take a chance and combine the success of Total Request and MTV Live to make "Total Request Live". TRL debuted on September 14, 1998, with Carson Daly as the host, and in march of 1999, the show permanently changed it's title to the acronym "TRL". The show has gone a long way and is still a huge success in it's 9th quarterly season (3rd yearly season). )) carson daly (bio excerpt from mtv online) Carson Daly first burst onto the MTV scene in the summer of '97, as a permanent "resident" at Motel California. Carson's goals were pondering theology or playing the amateur golf circuit...but he soon found his career interning at KCMJ, a Palm Springs radio station, and quickly got promoted to producer of the morning show. After that, Carson worked for six months as a producer of on-air talent with an overnight-DJ slot at a station in San Diego. Carson's overnight shift gave him a chance to land a job at San Francisco's Live 105 FM. In 1995, Carson worked the drive shift at KOME FM in San Jose. The next summer, Carson headed back home to L.A., where he was the nighttime DJ at KROQ FM, paving the way for MTV to discover his talent. Carson from sunny Santa Monica now lives in New York City, where he has been a VJ for more than 4 1/2 years. He is also the regular host of Total Request Live which broadcasts live each weekday from the MTV Studios in Times Square. )) being in the audience (hotline #: 212.398.8549) This used to be extremely tricky, but now with the help of the Audience Hotline, kids aging from 18 to 24 are able to see live tapings of TRL at the MTV Studios. Some other ways to get up is to arrive at the studios very early and stand in line and wait for the producer to come out to ask trivia or music questions, a correct answer could be your pass inside. Another way is to dress up in a crazy way to attract attention in Times Square, this usually works time to time but you gotta be real lucky. |
