Use A Soft Grip!

Avoid holding the bat flush against the web of your hand. Hold the bat softly and leave space to help absorb impact.

The Grip

First, wrap your left hand around the bat just above the knob. Next wrap your right hand around the bat so it is just above the left one. Grip the bat firmly, but not too tightly, for maximum bat control.

"If you are left handed, the positions of your left and right hand will be the opposite."

Step 1

  • Stand in the batter's box

  • Get in a comfortable batting stance
  • Wrap your left hand around the bat handle just above the knob
  • Grip the bat where your fingers meet your palm
  • Hold the bat firmly, but not too tightly

Step 2

  • Wrap the fingers of your right hand around the bat handle above your left hand

  • Hold the bat where your fingers meet your palm
  • Twist your hands so the large knuckles of the top hand are lined up between the large and finger knuckles of your bottom one

Skills Drills

Balance the bat

Practice holding the bat just above the knob with a proper grip and get used to the length, weight and balance of your bat. A bat you can swing comfortably is better than a heavier bat that will force you to choke up.

Experiment for a good grip

Work on refining your grip in the batting cage by making small adjustments to see and feel what works best for you.

Troubleshooting Tips

Bat Size

If you have trouble controlling your swing, you might be using too big a bat. Find a bat that is not too heavy and that you can hold comfortably.

Time Out

If your grip does not feel right when you are up at bat, call for a time out. Wait for the umpire to signal time and step out of the box to regroup.
