New PowerPoint 2007 Stuff

There is a lot of stuff that's new in 2007. This page is about the stuff you won't find by clicking Help and What's New. This page is for the little stuff that is not well covered, or maybe even mentioned, by Microsoft. Some of it is stuff that is new and cool, some is stuff I miss :-(, and some is the stuff new users find confusing.

Masters and Custom Layouts

I have a bunch of stuff about Masters and Layouts on another page, but I'm bringing it up here because recently I have seen a few questions about not being able to access stuff on the Master. That's the confusing part. Users who have upgraded are used to being where they need to be once they get to Master View. In 2007, when you click View > Master View, it takes you to the master for the layout of the currently selected slide, but anything added to the slide master in PowerPoint 2003 will only be editable on the overall design master. In Master View, you have to click on the larger slide at the top of the slide thumbnails to be able to edit stuff placed on the slide master in 2003.

Summary Slide :-(

Back in the old days, I would create an agenda slide with my main points listed and then could automatically create additional slides that used those bullets as titles. They took that away. So then I would create my slides and then create the agenda slide by using the Summary Slide command. Now, they've taken that away as well. Why???!!!! Oh well, at least we still have copy and paste!

WordArt

New and improved (here and in Excel... only poor old Word is left with the old stuff...).

Compare and Merge :-(

It's gone. If you want to compare and or merge text, though, you can use Word tools!  Save your presentations as Word outlines and then use Combine from the Compare button in the Compare group of the Review tab in Word. You can then open the resulting outline in PowerPoint to apply your chosen design. It is a pain, but better than nothing if you have multiple people sending you ideas for changes in a presentation.
