HOUSE BIERMANS

Bierman House, is one of the 'colonial ' houses in Namilyango College. It is among the colonial houses, because of its architectural structure, which depicts the 19th century European structural looks. The house is named after a Mill Hill missionary, Bishop John Biermans, who was succeeded by Bishop Hanlon .He was Bishop between 1912 and 1924.Bishop John Biermans was one of the pioneer evangelists in this part of the country. House Biermans is strategically located behind the conspicuous Mill Hill memorial library, and is surrounded by house Campling and the school sick bay.

Up to 1922, house Biermans was the home of all categories of students, from all the classes in the school, and at that time, this mixture of students was the force behind the mighty and appealing characteristics of the house and its members. Today, however, the house is the proud home of s.4 students, the self -declared candidates, who interact freely and cordially to uplift the standards of the house. The official members of the house, who reside in other houses, keep coming to their mother house to be updated with the latest developments on the ground. These have been an important asset to the house, especially when it comes to much cherish inter house competition.

House Biermans was constructed in the early years of the school, to cater for approximately 60 students. However, owing to the increase in enrolment in the school, a reflection of the rising demand for education in the school, the house, today holds about 90 students. The time it was built, and its shape gave it the tag of colonial house. In the early days, students from other houses used this tag in a derogatory manner, but today, the members of house Biermans have built pride out of the otherwise derogatory term. They especially take pride in the fact that colonial as the house may appear, it is one of the oldest houses in the school, a fact that not only makes the house members happy, but also proves to be an important source of inspiration to them.

With their bright yellow colour, the official colour of the house, house Biermans has moved a mile further than the other houses, especially in the field of sports. The house features prominently in both sports and football. It boasts as a home of a considerable number of the members of the school's football and rugby teams. The house's common room is also a potential training ground for some of the best students who constitute the table tennis and chess teams. In fact house Biermans is a home of indoor games in Namilyango College.

In the academic field, being one of the mother residential houses of S.4 students, House Hanlon is associated with the ever improving S4 results in the school over the years .The House is always lively and full of activity towards the final examinations, and after the results have been announced, since the successful students come back to the house to have a victorious look at their small 'Alma Matter'.

Under the guidance of the housemaster, Mr. Kirega Fred, and the leadership of the house captains and prefects, House Biermans has a very bright future, which the house members are looking forward to. As the school celebrates 95 years since it was founded, the members of House Biermans take this time to reflect on the contribution that was made by Bishop John Biermans to the school and to the Roman Catholic faith in general. The members also look at the personality of this man of God, who, though dead, has, through his role, greatly changed the quality if lives of thousands of people far away from where he was born. The house members renew their commitment to persue the principles and ideas that Bishop John Biermans stood for, in the hope that were sown by him will continue to manifest in the form of the personality that he was.
