CUSTOM CRADLE COPY

The JOWI Sailboat Support Systems Custom/Racing Yacht Cradle Division offers both design-engineering as well as the fabrication of custom cradles for any size sailboat. With over twenty years of experience in cradle design and construction, the JOWI name on our well proven equipment, stands for itself.

A partial list of the boats that JOWI has built custom cradles for are: "Stars and Stripes" and "Young America" America's Cup contenders, two cradles for the Whitbread 60 "Chessie Challenge" that take apart to stow in a 20' container, "Capricorno", "Sleighride", "Equation", "Blue Yankee", all of the One Design 48 boats, the 90' sloop "Savannah" and even a cradle for shipping the ex-Kennedy motor vessel "Marlin" to Italy. Some of the builders we supply are: Geotz Custom Sailboats, Carroll Marine, Holby Yachts, Boston Boat Works, TPI Composites and Concordia Custom Yachts.

Most of the cradles we made for these boats were a Hi-Lo configuration, pioneered by JOWI. This feature allows cradling a boat with the keel removed for a low profile and center of gravity while transporting the vessel. The cradle can be quickly and easily raised to the high position for supporting the boat with the keel attached. In most instances, we have furnished a companion keel cradle that can be used for shipping the keel in a horizontal position as well as supporting the keel in a vertical portion for installation and removal from the boat's hull.

JOWI can do all of the design work or build to your specifications and drawings. For quotations, we furnish a generic Hi-Lo cradle drawing that simply requires filling in the blank dimensions, plus furnishing us the particular boat details - length, beam, draft and displacement, for a prompt, cradle delivered to yard price. We ship anywhere on our own trucks to assure a cradle arrives on time, in good condition and help keep costs to a minimum. We offer custom finishes - any color and hot dipped galvanized as well. Custom lettering and logos are available along with such options as ratcheting tie downs, padeyes, caster wheels, special fastening and lifting brackets, etc.

Of course, not every sailboat fits on one of our production models. Or you may need specialized features not found on our production models. JOWI can custom build a cradle to your specifications.

One user of JOWI custom cradles is the One-Design 48 fleet. These ultra-sportsters must remove their keels each time they are shipped from race venue to race venue, and need a cradle to hold the hull either with the keel in place or with the keel off.

JOWI came up with this solution. At top is the cradle as it would recieve the boat out of the water, as it may be drystored for shorter periods. Below that is the configuration for when the keel has been removed from the hull, allowing the hull to sit much closer to the ground, for greater stability. (The size of the Geo was not altered for these pictures.)

The right supports for the right job are crucial. No 1D48 owner would settle for jackstands to support their boat, cradles are a must. And why buy two cradles for the same boat, when the same can be accomplished by one?

And if you have a hull of unusual proportions, JOWI can again save the day, with a cradle built to specific, custom dimensions. You don't lose the flexibility of a standard JOWI cradle, however, custom cradles are also adjustable to carry a given range of boats.

The largest production model cradle is meant to carry a boat with a maximum length of sixty feet. JOWI has built custom cradles for larger sizes, up to ninety feet.

Custom cradles are also available to be mounted on JOWI Trailers as well. Custom trailer wheels and modifications are possible too.
