The 5th Month

Ashley & Austin's Journal
September 1998

Austin is now 5 months old. This past month has seen a lot of changes in our house. The first thing is Austin went to the doctor for his 4 month check-up and shots. He weighed 16 lb. 1 3/4 oz. The doctor says to start him on solids now. I tried to give him cereal and he just won't open his mouth. My husband and I both talked about it and we feel that Austin is just too young, even at 5 months.

After Austin got his shots he got a horrible ear infection. He ran a fever for 3 days and screamed non stop (of course we were at my in-law's while this happened.) The only thing he seemed to want was to nurse and be held. I took him back to the doctor and they put him on an antibiotic. The doctor said that it wouldn't make him feel better for 2-3 days so we got some ear drops at the health food store.

A couple of days after we got this cleared up I drank a glass of milk. I am not a big milk person and this was only my 2nd glass sense he was born. That night Austin was up every 2 hours. He would try to nurse and then pull away crying. All that would help him was to sleep on my chest. The next morning he seemed to be better. I talked to my LLL leader and she and I both seem to think that is was the milk. I haven't had any scene and Austin has been fine.

The two big things that are now happening are Austin is sitting by himself and he is cutting his first tooth. I don't know how I feel about all of this. I am really nervous about how he does with his new teeth.

See you next month!
