Later in the afternoon, around 4pm, there was a contest of improvisation. AJ and Lysa decided to go watch it, while the other guys got something to eat. "J, you guys should sing." Lysa suggested, as they took their seats. "What? What would we sing?" AJ asked. "Well you guys sounded pretty good singing that song by Boyz II Men the other day." Lysa mentioned. "That was with music…we probably can’t sing a cappella." AJ said. "Try…what do you have to lose?" Lysa said, standing up and pulling AJ to his feet. They found the rest of the group in the food tent. "Guys, Lysa says we should enter the contest…" AJ said. "And do what?" Howie asked. "Sing." AJ answered. "Sing? We can’t sing." Nick said, with a laugh. "Yes you can." Francesca answered. Nick looked at her. "What? You guys were good when we heard you the other day." She said. They all looked at each other. "What does the winner get?" Kevin asked, not too keen on the idea. "I don’t know…but it’ll be an experience." AJ said, shrugging his shoulders. They all agreed to do it, but before they entered their names they saw if they actually had any talent. They cleared their throats and started to sing "Water Runs Dry". An older man walked by. "You boys in that contest?" he asked. "Yea." They answered. "Good luck. Not that you’ll need it. With voices like that you’re bound to win." he said with a smile and continued walking. "Thanks." AJ shouted to him. "See we told you, you guys were good. Now hurry up and go enter before they start the contest." Francesca said, pushing them out of the tent. They signed up and were scheduled to go last. Lysa and Francesca were in the front row, and were joined by Nicolette and her father and brother. It was their turn to go, and before they announced who they were and what they were going to do, they had a little huddle. "What are we gonna call ourselves?" Nick asked. They all thought a minute. "We don’t have all day boys." One of the judges said from the side of the stage. "Camp Backstreet…Camp Backstreet…" Howie started singing the camp anthem. "The Backstreet Boys." AJ suggested. "Yea that’s great…" Brian said. "Break!" they said in unison and all pulled away. "Hey y’all. We’re the Backstreet Boys, and we’re gonna sing for y’all." Brian said, clearing his throat, "This is "Water Runs Dry" by Boyz II Men." He continued.
"We don't even talk anymore
And we don't even know what we argue about
Don't even say I love you no more
Cause sayin' how we feel is no longer allowed
Some people will work things out
And some just don't know how to change
Let's don't wait till the water runs dry
We might watch our whole lives pass us by
Let's don't wait till the water runs dry
We'll make the biggest mistake of our lives
Don't do it baby
Now they can see the tears in our eyes
But we deny the pain that lies deep in our hearts
Well maybe that's a pain we can't hide
Cause everybody knows that we're both torn apart
Why do we hurt each other
Why do we push love away
Let's don't wait till the water runs dry
We might watch our whole lives pass us by
Let's don't wait till the water runs dry
We'll make the biggest mistake of our lives
Don't do it baby"
The audience stood up and started clapping. "Whoa…we got a standing O." AJ said looking out at the crowd in disbelief. "The votes are unanimous…the winners are the Backstreet Boys." the man running the contest announced. "We won. Oh yea. This is awesome." Brian said, jumping around. "Yo Bri. Calm down." Nick said laughing, watching his friend spin around in circles. They were awarded a big trophy and the audience gave them another big round of applause. They joined the girls off stage and after a few minutes of talking, a man came over to them. "Hey you guys were terrific. I haven’t heard talent like that for a long time. How would you guys like a record deal?" the man asked. "A record deal?" Brian asked in disbelief. "This is our first day singing…" Nick said. "We gotta think about it." AJ told the man. "That’s fine. When you come to your decision, give me a call." he said, handing AJ his business card. "K, thanks, Mr…" AJ said looking at the card, "…Wright." He said, reading the name. "Ok. I hope to be hearing from you soon." The man said, walking away.
"Guys this is like major commitment." Howie said. "No kidding Howie." AJ said. "I think we should do it." Brian said. "No kidding Brian. We could kinda tell you were into this whole thing, jumping around and all." AJ said, with a laugh. "For real guys. Do you know how much fun this would be. We would be together all year round!" Brian exclaimed. "Bri’s right." Nick said, "We should give it a try. See where it takes us." He said. "I don’t know about this…" Kevin said. "Oh come on Kev. It’s worth a try." Brian said, annoyed at his cousins skeptical attitude. "Well whatever you guys are deciding…it looks like me, Nick and Bri are in." AJ said, turning to Howie and Kevin. "I’m in." Howie said immediately. "Kev?" AJ asked. "Yea…I’m in." Kevin said, with a smile. "Ah yea! We’re gonna be famous! We’re gonna be famous!" they all sang dancing around. "Crap! It’s quarter to 6. We gotta go check in." Lysa said, pulling AJ’s arm, snapping him out of his daze. "Come on you guys…or you won’t be living let alone becoming famous." She said as they all started over to the merry-go-round.
After their second check-in they had two hours left at the fair. They all ate dinner and went on some rides, and played a few games. *DING DING DING* "We have a winner." A man behind a booth called, "What would you like young man?" he asked Nick. Nick turned to Francesca, "What do you want sweets?" he asked. "That one." Francesca said, pointing to a big teddy bear. "Thanks Nick." Francesca said as they walked back to the buses. "Sure thing." Nick said, carrying the bear under his arm cause it was too big for Francesca to hold.
The bus got back to camp around 10pm that night. "Lysa…baby…" AJ said, gently nudging her. "We back?" she asked groggily. "Yea." He said pulling her up out of the seat. They were the last ones on the bus. "Come here." He said, pulling her into his arms. After a few minutes he pulled away, when the bus driver started yelling at them to get off. "Sorry." They said, as they got off the bus. "Good night." Lysa told the bus driver. "Night kids." She answered. AJ walked Lysa to her bunk house. When they got there, they sat outside on the bench. AJ took Lysa’s hand, and smiled at her. He pulled a ring out of his pocket. "I got this for ya." AJ said, "It’s a promise ring. Well more like a ‘Would you be my girlfriend?’ kinda thing." He said shyly. Lysa smiled. "Yea, I’ll be your girlfriend." She answered. AJ smiled and slipped the ring on her finger. They kissed good night and AJ left for his bunk. Lysa went inside and Francesca was waiting up for her. "Hey! What took you two so long to get off the bus?" Francesca asked. "He asked me to be his girlfriend." Lysa said happily, falling onto her bed. "I would hope so after what went on at the lake the other day." Francesca said smiling. "But now it means more…I mean I’m officially his girlfriend."
