Bearwallow Picnic Ride

Seven of the Fairview Equestrian Club members met on Sunday 8/26/01 in Gerton for a picnic trail ride up to the summit of Bearwallow Mountain - sponsored by Susan Crosson. Miracle of miracles, everyone was ON TIME and we actually left at the scheduled 3 p.m. departure time!! We are getting better at this....
In attendance were Don Groh, with his buckskin Missouri Foxtrotter, Dusty. Denise Hulslander enjoyed riding Susan's P.O.A., Galaxy. Cheryl Lore brought her white Appaloosa, Sassy along with niece Kris on sorrel Paint, Sienna. Emily Shields and friend Ann, rode over from Libba's place having borrowed her two horses...a bay Arabian and a beautiful roan Appaloosa (wish you could've come, Libba!). Last, but not least, Susan Crosson rode her bay Arabian, Winston.
The day was sunny and hot, headed for our first stop at the spectacular overlook at Blue Ridge Pastures. About a half hour's ride...
We made it to Blue Ridge Pastures and rested the horses while waiting for Susie Hamilton to join up with us. When we decided to move the horses into the shade, Kris hung on for dear life when Sienna started bucking after walking through a hornet's nest!! Missed taking a photo of the bronc ride...

We left Blue Ridge Pastures and the lovely view to head across the ridge to Bearwallow Mtn. We traveled through the woods (much cooler out of the sun) until we arrived at the gate at the foot of Bearwallow Mtn. Susan had the key, so we passed through the gate and began the steady uphill climb to the top. Our horses traveled at different paces, but we all met again near the summit around 5 p.m. We were greeted by a curious cow.
We headed for the shade of the trees at the summit and tied the horses under the trees. Susan and Don unpacked the food and drinks from the packs and saddlebags...we ate and enjoyed the views and good company until around 6 p.m. or so.
In the distance, we could hear thunder, so we quickly loaded up for the long descent back to Susan's. All in all, we had a great ride. Enjoying the mountain views with the horses is right close to being in Heaven. Thank you again, Susan. Hope to see the rest of you next time!

Special thanks to: Susan Crosson for sponsoring the ride and providing beverages & snacks, Denise Hulslander for taking pictures, and Cheryl Lore for putting it all together on this page!!
