WASHINGTON, N.C. - A landscape painting featuring a scene from an eastern North Carolina marsh by Washington artist Don Miller has been chosen for the cover of the Beaufort County Arts Council's upcoming cookbook while a scene of a local ferry landing by Sally Hofmann will be featured on the back cover, Arts Council officials announced Monday.

The works by Miller and Hofmann are two of the 13 works of art by Beaufort County artists that will be featured in the cookbook, "Plate and Palette: A Collection of Fine Art and Food from Beaufort County",  to be published in the fall.

The 13 works of art are featured in the cookbook and are part of the First South Bank art collection.

The First South Bank art collection began in 1976 after Tom Vann, president of First South Bank (then Home Savings and Loan) developed a keen interest in the visual arts during a visit to Beaufort County by the Arts Train.  Through his work on the project as facilities chairman and with the advice of longtime arts advocate Louise Lane, Mr. Vann and the savings and loan's then board of directors decided to begin buying art for the thrift's office.

Proceeds from cookbook sales will help fund Arts Alive, the Beaufort County Arts Council's newly-created endowment, a source of future funding that will enable the Beaufort County Arts Council to continue to fulfill its mission of providing opportunities in Beaufort County and to be a moving force in the community's involvement in the arts for all time.

Arts Alive is a designated fund, under the umbrella of the Beaufort County chapter of the N.C. Community Foundation that will enable donors to benefit the Arts Council with their charitable donations.  The Arts Council hopes to establish an endowment of between $500,000 and $1 million, with the interest being used to defray the agency's annual operating and program costs.

Besides Miller and Hofmann, the artists whose works will be featured in the cookbook are Bettie B. Bradshaw, Irene Glover Forbes, Diane Lee, Roberta Woolridge, Lynn Mallison Morrow, Jeffrey Jakub, Riley Simpson, Ann Respess, Fran Van Baars, Dorothy Ann Walker, Sam Wall.

The Beaufort County Arts Council, under the direction of an all-volunteer Board of Directors, provides cultural opportunities through initiation, support and presentation of artistic programs in Beaufort County and is a moving force in the community’s involvement in the arts.
