Every BCAC Membership Supports...

Performing Arts

Each year the Beaufort County Arts Council, often with other organizations, presents and supports county-wide a broad range of performing arts  --  music, dance,  theater and participatory events.  Throughout the year the Arts Council presents military band concerts, bell choirs and productions by the Washington Community Theatre Association.  These performances are funded in part by the North Carolina Arts Council's Series Support Grant, Beaufort County and the City of Washington's HeART of the City Concert Series.

Visual Arts

Fine Art Show

Visual arts by local and regional artists and
craftsmen are presented throughout the
year in the Washington Civic Center gallery.
New Exhibits usually open on a Thursday evening
and often include a reception in the gallery.

The Arts Council also schedules workshops
to enable artists to improve their skills.

Washington’s annual Smoke On The Water Festival
is the setting for the Arts Council’s juried Fine Arts Show.  Held each October, the show includes over 200 artists from throughout the region competing for $2300 in prizes.

Each year a renowned artist judges the show.
The award-selections from the show remain
on display to the public through the holidays.

Art For Young People

Encouraging an appreciation for the arts at an early age is a primary goal of the Arts Council.  Working with the Beaufort County schools, the Arts Council sponsors educational programs for school students.

The annual Student Art Show is held in April and is a juried exhibition that features artwork from students in the Beaufort County Schools. An annual Art Camp in June for children in kindergarten through fourth grades give young people  "hands on"
experience in the arts.  Shoestring Theater, a musical theater camp for young people, is held for two weeks in July.

Grants

Other Events

Each year, the Arts Council awards grants
through the N.C. Arts Council's Grassroots
Arts Program, to help local cultural
organizations, programs and artists.

The Arts Council also participated in the
Regional Artist Project Grant designed to
help artist development.

The Arts Council also offers occasional
out-of-town trips to give local residents
the chance to visit important cultural events
in other locations.

Previous trip locations have included
Raleigh, Asheville, Winston-Salem,
Charlotte, Washington, D.C. and Richmond.
