The following are the run assignments for the Durham Fire Department:

Automatic Fire Alarm: 1 Engine company, 1 Ladder company, 1 Battalion chief

Haz-Mat Call: 1 Engine company, 2 Haz-Mat Engines(E-13,E-3), Haz-Mat 13, 1 Squad company, 1 Battalion chief, Safety officer. (Carbon Monoxide Call): 1 Ladder company(if they take a reading of 30ppm or more Hazmat responds).

Medical call: 1 Engine company or 1 Squad company, Durham Co. EMS Unit. (See EMS run protocol below).

Still Alarm (trash fire, dumpster fire, grass/brush fire, vehicle fire, investigation, etc.): 1 Engine company

Structure Fire: 3 Engine companies, 2 Ladder companies, 1 Squad company, 2 Battalion chiefs, Safety officer. (working fire- Mobile Support 1 and a Durham Co. EMS unit also respond)

Technical Rescue: 1 Engine company, 1 Rescue-Engine (E-7), TRT rescue (R-7), 1 Battalion chief, 1 Ladder company, 1 Squad company, Safety officer.

Motor Vehicle Accident: 1 Engine company, Durham Co. EMS Unit

Vehicle Accident with Pin/Entrapment: 1 Engine company,1 Squad company, Ladder company or Engine company with Hurst tool , Battalion chief, Safety officer. Durham Co. EMS Unit

Water Rescue: Same as technical rescue plus water rescue engine (E-14), water rescue unit (R-14)

EMS RUN PROTOCOL
Durham Fire Department responds only to life-threatening emergency medical calls. Examples of this include; chest pain, difficulty breathing, shootings, stabbings, and other calls determined to be life-threatening in nature by the 911 communicators.
Fire apparatus are not dispatched to non-emergent medical calls including; sick calls, minor fractures, nausea/vomiting, abdominal pain, ob, nature unknown, 911 hang ups, etc.
The fire department responds with either an Engine company or Squad company to EMS calls(Their are 3 EMT-I Squads that cover Engine's 1,2,4 still alarm area, they also cover parts of Engine's 3 and 5 still area). Ladder companies will respond to EMS calls when the primary engine company in that still is unavailable.
