Chapter Nineteen -- The Hardest Thing

Lori walks out from O'Keefe's office. She walks directly to her desk without looking at anyone else. She takes out a big paper box and starts packing up her stuff. Everyone starts going up to her. They knew what's happening is really hard for Lori and even themselves to accept.

"What are you doing Lori? What's wrong?" Nick asks anxiously.

"Guys... thanks you all so much... I've a really good time working with you guys. But I don't think we have the chance to work together anymore, I quit, I'm no longer part of this big LAPD family anymore, I'm sorry." She continues packing up.

"Lori, it's not your fault, don't do that to yourself..." Lori ignores Nick, she picks up her paper box and starts leaving. "I gotta go, bye you guys, and thanks once again."

Nick gets hold of her arm, Lori looks at him, with tears in her eyes, "Nick, please... let me go..." Nick slowly lets go and watches Lori walking out the door.

Nick picks up his cell phone and calls.

<Hi... this is Lori Lee. I'm sorry I cannot get your phone call right now. So please leave me a message after the beep and I'll reply you asap. BEEP>

Nick hangs up, "Damn it!"

"Hey, what's wrong Nick?" Brian and Kevin ask.

"Lori is not picking up again, it has been two weeks. Kev, Brian, TWO weeks. I haven't see my girlfriend for two weeks. I'm really worry about her."

"Nick, she really needs sometime, see, it's even hard for us to accept the fact, and she is the daughter of Peter Lee, she will has the hardest time to get through the whole thing, you know what I mean?"

"But I'll always be there for her..."

"Look, Nick..." Kevin says, "Part of the reason it's because of you. Based on the whole situation, Lori thinks that she don't deserves you. You're the most talented cop in LA and her dad is the biggest drug dealer in LA. She is stuck between the GOOD and the EVIL at the same time..."

"Oh goodness... why is this happening to me and her. Everything is so good for us so far and now..." Nick sighed.

Peter knocks on the door. "Lori, you asleep yet?"

"No dad." Peter goes into her room and sits down next to her.

"Dad, why are you doing this?"

"Lori, are you mad at me?"

"No, daddy. No matter what, you're my dad. If I'm mad at you, I would not have quit my job then, and I would not have stop seeing Nick." Lori looks at Peter. "Dad, but I don't want you to end up going to jail. You see, mom and I really needs you. Can you stop doing the drug dealing?"

"Lori... I can't."

"Dad, how bout this. One more drug dealing and you quit. And I'll help you on this one since I'm familiar with the procedures the LAPD does. So you can get over with this one easily and we will just leave United States with mom and we'll have a fresh start. I just want a normal family life."

Peter thinks for a moment. "okay... Lori... deal. I promise we will leave right after the last dealing."

"Thanks daddy." She gives him a hug. "I think I still get a couple of things to handle, I'll go out for a while."

Lori gets in her PASSAT. She takes out her cell phone and calls Nick.

<Hello?> Lori doesn't say anything.

<Hello??? is this Lori... Lori, speak up... Lori?>

"hi... Nick..."

<Lori! It's really you... you finally call me! I miss you so much baby...>

"Nick, I wanna talk to you, can you go to the Central Park now?"

<Of course... I'll meet you there then.>

Nick arrives to the Central Park and sees Lori sitting on the bench next to the fountain, the one they always sit on.

"Lori! I'm so worry about you." And he holds her tightly in his arms. But unlike usual, Lori pushes him away lightly.

"Lori, anything wrong?"
