Talk to Me
| Chapter 11 Aaron, Nick, Kristyne, and AJ sat inside McDonalds eating and talking. “Do you think she’s gonna be okay?” AJ asked. “AJ, I really can’t say. I wanna think positive and all, but in reality the longer she remains unconscious the less hopeful things look. Now that I am feeling a little better, out of shock at least, I just wanna go see her for myself.” Kristyne explained. There really wasn’t much anyone could do except wait and hope. After deciding to get something eat Nick and Kristyne called AJ thinking he’d probably want to know what was up with Evelynn since the two seemed to get along so well. They were right. “Well that plan sounds good to me. Let’s finish up here and head over to the hospital. Do you think they’ll let us all in?” AJ was all ready stuffing the last quarter of his burger into his mouth and gathering up his trash. “I called and they are letting one person visit for 15 minutes at a time. Her family is letting a few close friends visit so it’s cool. We just can’t stay long.” Kristyne wasn’t too sure how well she was going to handle seeing her best friend in the condition she was in, but she was not just going to not visit. AT THE HOSPITAL Nick, Aaron, and AJ let Kristyne go in first while they stayed in the waiting room. Standing at the door Kristyne took in the sight of her friend lying motionless in the hospital bed with IV, oxygen tubes, and other wires and monitors attached to her. Even with her medical knowledge, seeing Evie just laying there frightened her and she had to forcefully will her feet to move to the side of the bed. She wanted to touch her, hold her hand or something, but Evie was so bruised and bandaged Kris didn’t know what to do. Instead, she pulled a chair close to the bed, sat down, and gently placed her head on the pillow next to Evie’s. For the longest time she just listened to the sound of the oxygen moving through the tube in and out of Evie’s lungs, helping her breathe while the punctured lung healed. Finally, she spoke. Softly, “Hey girl. Well, this sucks.” A soft uncomfortable laugh, then, “What am I gonna do with you, huh? We were supposed to be past all this shit. Ya know? You were fine, I was getting better.” She let out another quiet uncomfortable chuckle while a few tears slipped down her cheeks. “You gotta snap outta this, Evelynn. I know this sounds selfish, but I can’t handle this. I can’t. I can’t lose you. You just wake the fuck up, you hear me girl. Wake up so I can take you home.” After that, Kris just put her head down again. Every so often she’d whisper “Wake up, Evie, just wake up.” When Kristyne felt a hand on her shoulder she looked up knowing it was Nick. He was looking at Evelynn. The look in his eyes mirrored the fear in her’s. “She doesn’t look the same does she? She was always so full of life and spirit. Now it’s like she’s barely even here.” She said as tears continued from her eyes. It was hard to know what to say at that moment. The girl lying in the bed did not look like the same girl that gave him so much hell for hurting Kristyne, or the same girl that laughed and joked with AJ all night on Halloween. She looked so fragile and pale. “We need to try and stay strong, for Evie. Okay? C’mon, why don’t you get some fresh air and let AJ have a few minutes, okay?” As Nick helped Kristyne from the room he looked back over his shoulder at Evelynn and said a silent prayer for her to get better soon.
