Talk to Me
| Breathe “So, what do you think? Do I look ok? Do you think this is appropriate?” “Girl, would you relax already. It’s JUST dinner. Might I add, a dinner that you were hesitant to go to in the first place. Why are you so nervous now?” “I just want to look nice. Is there anything wrong with that?” Kris was indeed very nervous and had been ever since Nick had called to work out the details of their dinner date. Tonight it would be just the two of them; her and Nick, alone. She was so nervous she feared she wouldn’t even be able to talk. At least before, at the party, there were other people around. Evie was there to help her. Now she would have to face him all alone. “Maybe this isn’t such a good idea after all.” “Oh no you don’t. You’re not backing out on this now. Goodness Kris, he is probably on his way over now as we speak!” “Why did I let you talk me into this? I’m not ready to date, even casually.” “Kris, you have to begin sometime. The sooner you start, the easier it will get.” “I know, I know you’re right.” Kris continued to fidget with her hair, the hem on her dress, her earrings, her... “Kris! Stop it already! Jeez! Go sit on the couch until he gets here. You need to relax before you make yourself sick.” So, Kris did exactly that. She went and sat on the couch and started flipping channels on the TV, but not really watching anything that came on. After about 3 times through the channels Evie grabbed the remote and settled on a movie on HBO. Just a few minutes later the doorbell rang. Kris jumped and the color drained from her face. “Kris, you just sit there for a sec. I’ll get the door, ok?” Kris just shook her head in agreement. “Hey Nick. Have any problems finding the house?” Evie greeted. “Nope, not at all. You gave good directions. Is Kris ready?” Evie let him in the house but kept him the foyer. “Look, she is ready but a nervous wreck. So she may not talk much for a while. It’s not you. She was always shy, but well, things have been, well, different this past year. So, try and make her laugh or something to calm her some. Ok?” Nick just smiled. She was nervous? Why would she be nervous? Am I that intimidating? “Yeah. No problem,” he finally managed. “Kris, Nick’s here. You ready?” Evie called to her friend. Only a few seconds later Kris appeared by her side wearing an A-line black velvet dress with an empire waist and spaghetti straps. The dress came just above her knees and was completed with 2” black heels. “I’m ready whenever you are,” Kris smiled at Nick. “Well, Kiddies, don’t stay out too late, and behave you two!” Evie was chuckling as she closed the door behind them.
