Talk to Me
| Breathe It didn’t take them long, really. And it would have taken less time had they not got into a water fight. The kitchen finally clean with the both of them soaked and laughing they sat on the floor and started talking. First about the beach and how each found their own comfort there. Nick told her about his Marathon home. Kristyne talked about her work with the rescue squad. They talked about their early childhood. They talked about the party that day. They talked so much before they knew it Evie came stumbling into the kitchen. “Hey, I thought I heard your voices. Nick, you got any coffee here?” Evie was rubbing the sleep out of her eyes. “Coffee? This late? Evie, we’ll be leaving soon.” “Late? Girl do know what time it is?” When they both gave her a stupid look she just laughed. “Umm, guys. The sun is coming up.” “No way!” They both exclaimed, standing up and going to the living room. Sure enough the sky was getting lighter. “I don’t believe we sat there and talked all night!” Nick exclaimed. “You don’t believe it. I haven’t done that since, well, since high school.” They both looked at each other and broke into a fit of laughter. “Oh, yeah. You guys are definitely tired. Slaphappy is more like it. So, DO you have any coffee?” She tried again. “Yeah, sure. Hold on.” Nick managed while wiping tears from his eyes. “Nick, Man! What is all the noise down here this early?” They all heard AJ moan as he came down the stairs. “Well, since we are all up, we might as well go get some breakfast. Kris, come on. What’s a few more hours now?” Nick gave her what he thought as his best puppy dog eyes. “Whoa! You guys stayed the night?” AJ was wide-awake now staring at Nick, Kristyne, and Evie. “It seems, dear AJ, that these two sat and talked all night. On the kitchen floor no less. Like there wasn’t anyplace more comfortable in this big ass house.” Evie supplied. “What?!” Nick and Kristyne looked from AJ, to Evie, to each other and started laughing again. “Oh, Good God! Not again. Come on AJ, its gonna be a long morning. Go get dressed, it seems Nicky is taking us to breakfast.” All Kris and Nick could do was laugh harder. “Ok, I’ll go to breakfast, but I HAVE to have a shower first. Do you mind?” “Nope. I’ll show you where it’s at upstairs. You have a change of clothes?” A little over 30 minutes later the four of them were heading out the door to a local breakfast deli Nick was prone to frequent when he was home. Conversation was easy and light. After exchanging numbers they said their goodbye and Kris and Eve headed home. “So.” “So, What?” Kris did not want to get into this. “So, what’cha talk about ALL NIGHT?” Eve was grinning from ear to ear. “You know. Just stuff.” God, she was so tired. Maybe Eve would drop it. “What type of stuff?” Guess not. “Just stuff. The beach, the party, stuff we did when we were younger. Nothing special.” “But you talked all night!” “So?” Eve noticed the blush on her friend’s cheeks. “You like him, don’t you?” “Oh, Evie, you are so childish sometimes. Of course, he’s a nice guy. What’s not to like?” “Are you gonna have dinner with him?” “I don’t know.” “Kris! You told him you would. Now I know you weren’t lying.” “No, I wasn’t lying. I’ll probably have dinner. I mean, that’s innocent enough. I just…” “You just what?” “That’s it, I don’t know, Evie. I mean, what could come of this? Nothing. Neither of us have the time. And me, I’m just not ready to trust someone. And every time I even think about trusting someone again, you know, letting them in, it’s like my brain suddenly forgets how to breathe. The panic in me is suffocating. You just don’t understand how it feels.” “Kris, you have to get over it. Girl, you’re gonna need to let someone in again sooner or later.” “Well, later is just fine by me. Besides, he has no idea what he is getting into being involved with me. And if he did, he’d high-tale-it the other way as fast as he could.” “You don’t know that. Give the man a chance. He could be just what you need.” “No, Evie, you don’t get it. I’M not what HE needs. Let’s just drop it ok. I’ll have dinner with him. He’s nice, he’s funny, and hell he’s absolutely gorgeous. But dinner is it. Ok? Please?” Kris gave her friend a pleading look. Evie just sighed. She knew Kris could be stubborn. But she had seen the way those two looked at each other at the party and during breakfast. They were what each other needed, even if Kris was too stubborn to realize it. Maybe Nick would and would help her see it too?
