Talk to Me
| Breathe The entire ride home was done in complete silence. As soon as the car came to a stop in Kris’s driveway she jumped and ran to the house without even saying goodbye or looking over her shoulder. Nick went home in anger. Angry at Kris for shutting him out and angrier still at himself for pushing her like he had done. Hadn’t AJ warned him just that day to take it easy, give her time. Things really were a mess and he didn’t think there would be anyway to make them right. “Oh, Hell! I don’t need the aggravation anyway.” He mumbled to himself as he entered the house and heard the phone ringing. “Hello?” “What the hell did you do to her?!” someone screamed at him through the phone. “Who is this? What do you mean?” He had no idea who was yelling at him on the other end, and didn’t really feel like having this conversation. He was just about ready to hang up when the reply came. “It’s Evelynn, you jerk! You want to tell me just WHY my best friend comes running in the house crying after being out with you? She won’t even talk to me. She can’t stop crying long enough. So, again I ask, just what the hell did you DO to her?” Evie was steamed and been dialing his house nonstop since Kris had gotten home. “I didn’t DO anything to her, ok. It’s not my fault she is selfish and refuses to open up. It’s not my fault she gets all defensive about innocent questions from her past. It’s not my fault she is so hell-bent on being strong for herself that she won’t let anyone get close to her. You know what? I don’t need this crap! Tell her I had a good time at dinner and to have a happy life, if she even knows how.” “You bastard! No it’s not your fault. But neither is it HER fault that her ex-boyfriend was abusive to her. It’s not her fault the same psycho boyfriend took revenge on her after she broke up with him by killing her parents. It is not HER fault that her parents were killed a year ago and SHE was the one to pull up on the scene. It’s not her fault that her one and only brother, her twin, blames her for their death, is a drug addict, and beat the shit out of her the night she met you on the beach. And it is not her fault that I convinced her to go out on that stupid date with an asshole like you! THAT is why she can’t talk about it. THAT is why she has a hard time letting people in. Everyone she has ever let in has either left her or hurt her in someway. And you just proved to her once again, that MEN cannot be trusted. Way to go, Nick. I hope YOU have a happy life!” Evie slammed the phone down and then ripped it out of the wall. How could he be so insensitive? How could he treat her like that? Meanwhile, Nick went from being raging mad to feeling like the lowest life form ever in the short time it took for Evie to unleash her barrage of an explanation. Hanging the phone up he went and sat on the couch in the dark, too stunned to do anything else. A few minutes later he jumped up, grabbed his keys and headed back out the door.
