In 1989 John debuted in GP 500 cc, and participated in one race (Belgian GP).
After winning the 1990 GP 250 world championship, John entered the GP 500 championship, with the same team. Despite two wins, a fourth and a third place in the final rankings, John didn't achieve the success that he had had in GP 250. In 1993, after a failed half season in GP 250 with Suzuki, John joined the Cagiva team, giving them their first dry weather victory. The next season was reasonably successful, given the fact that the main opponent was a certain Michael Doohan, on a certain Honda NSR 500. The combination team, bike and rider was good, but unfortunately, Cagiva had no money to continue in 1995. 1998 saw John return to GP 500, to race the winner's bike, the Honda NSR 500. John was not very lucky, as he found out the NSR 500 did not suit him very well. And neither did the team. He improved the latter during the 1999 season, but the team had old NSR 500 bikes and no money whatsoever, so this season was a disappointment, despite a pole position in Malaysia and a second place in the French GP. |
