DOWN MEMORY LANE - the 1950-70's

Kipawa agroundThis picture shows the Kipawa which ran aground in Bonavista harbor in 1979. The Kipawa had previously been a ferry operating between Bell Island and Portugal Cove for many years. Prior to being used on the Bell Island/Portugal Cove crossing, the Kipawa was used as a ferry boat in the Minas Basin of Nova Scotia
In 1982 the Kipawa was towed by the Coast Guard icebreaker Labrador from the Bonavista/Catalina area back to Halifax and from there she was towed by the tugboat Point Carroll to Parrsboro, N.S. where she was supposed to be cleaned, renovated and used as a tourist attraction. (Information obtained from "The Mail - Star", July 8, 1982.)UPDATE: Thanks to Wayne Gould of Halifax, N.S. who sent me the following information: The real name should be KIPAWO - derived from the towns of Kingsport, Parrsboro and Wolfville, between which the KIPAWO travelled for many years. It has been refurbished in the centre of the town of Parrsboro and used as a theatre during the summer months. .

Plowing Church Street

Would you believe that after a snowstorm like this all schools in the town of Bonavista as well as most businesses remained open! To pass away a couple of hours on a snowy winter afternoon, most men of the town came out to watch the snowplow in its formidable task.
The Mighty Bear Cats

What would winter be like without an outdoor hockey game? In this photo, the BONAVISTA BEAR CATS are playing a team from a nearby community, possibly Catalina or Melrose. The rink was located behind the F.P.U. Trading Company Store. Can you guess who the referee was? Rumor has it that Jack Alexander was the referee for this particular game.
