In this photo, taken in the early 1930's , my Grandfather and his friend are standing in the doorway of their fishing shed that was located near the shoreline of Cape Bonavista. They are probably deciding whether they should make another trip out to their cod traps or stay ashore and call it a day. Their decision will probably depend on the weather, the tides and the time of day. Even if they stay ashore there will still be plenty of work to do - nets to mend, salt fish to cure, vegetable gardens to tend as well as animals to feed.
This photo of an abandoned house on the road to Cape Bonavista was taken in the early 1970's. Small houses like this were once quite numerous on both sides of the road and the side roads in the Cape Bonavista area. They were the summer residences of the many fishermen and their families who moved to the Cape during the summer months in order to be close to the fishing grounds. At one time this area was a busy community from early spring until late fall. Besides the summer homes, the area also had a school and several shops that served the needs of the fishermen and their families. This house was probably one of the last summer homes left on the Cape. All is quiet there now, except for the passing tourists, families out for an evening drive or the occasional passing iceberg.
