Mission #5:

Encounter at Alpha-1

NOTE: This is a modified text of the mission, re-written to be easier to read, be slightly more interesting, and be in the third person instead of the second person. If you wish, you can view the raw log of the mission, including all out-of-game comments, here.

Gambit and Werewolf step up the ladder into the third level of the base, finding Smoky threading a piece of heavy brown cloth through the pile of Super Soakers. Adder arrives shortly thereafter.

"Oh, hi guys . . . when did you get back?" Adder asks. "Well, we don't have new orders . . . so I guess we should just patrol around the base, think so?"

"I wonder what the next mission will be," Smoky comments.

Adder shrugs. "Dunno."

"I say we go with Adder's idea," Gambit votes.

"There was an attack last night though . . . let's keep our eyes open," Adder comments. Smoky drags a chair from the corner of the room across the floor into the center and sits down, prompting a little amusement.

"All right," Gambit agrees. "I should grab a gun..."

"Go ahead, there's plenty right there," Adder says, pointing toward the weapons.

"What gun do you want?" Smoky asks.

"How about a 110?" Smoky hands the requested weapon to Gambit. Werewolf examines the weapons Smoky has.

Adder taps his foot from the doorway. "Let's get out of here and do our jobs, OK?"

Unexpectedly, someone pokes their head up from the ladder well and ascends onto the level, then turns away and begins around the other side of the room.

"Hey, who are you?" Adder asks, to no response. Hearing him, the three others within the room follow him out and around the building. Immediately spotting them, the person quickly steps out of view around the next corner.

"You guys go that way, I'll go around the opposite way," Adder whispers.

Following Smoky, Werewolf and Gambit begin walking around back the way they came and Adder continues forward. Smoky detects a faint scraping sound.

"Hey, Smoky," Werewolf whispers. "Can you hand me a 110?"

Smoky hands him the weapon, then prepares his own.

The two parties move in opposite directions around the room, but meet up again at the door without encountering him.

"Hmm . . ."

Making out a shadowy figure within the room, Adder points excitedly "He's in the room!"

They quickly step into the room and find the intruder behind the desk. He quickly spots the group and drops down behind the desk.

"Please identify yourself," Adder orders. Hearing no response, he repeats. Smoky hears a faint sound from behind the desk.

Adder runs around behind the desk, but finds him gone. Hearing footsteps outside the room, Smoky turns and flies out the door, catching a fleeting glimpse of the intruder descending the ladder.

"He's just going under the walls," Adder mutters. "They're made out of draped cloth."

Adder runs out of the room and around to the back, but Smoky races to the ladder and climbs down, yelling "Eveyrone come quick!"

Hearing him, the entire group quickly scrambled after Smoky as he flies across the next floor down, following the intruder towards the next ladder. The figure quickly circles around a tree and doubles back toward the ladder, and Smoky changes direction and passes his companions on their way to help as he tries to keep up. Adder mumbles something under his breath.

Smoky loses track of him as he gets back to the ladder leading up to the third floor, but Adder spots him climbing up and, catching up, leads the pursuit back to the third floor, followed closely by Werewolf. As they reach the top, they see the intruder enter the room again.

Adder tears into the room ready to tackle him, but there's no one in sight. Recalling the previous chase around the room, he dives under the back wall of the room as Smoky comes up the ladder and readys his weapon. Gambit stays at the ladder to guard it.

Seeing nothing, Smoky begins moving around the edge of the third floor, facing inward.

Still finding no sign of the intruder, Adder considers the possible ways the intruder could have gotten off the floor. In theory, the ladder was the only way up or down, but they might have gone . . .

Adder looks down at the trees supporting the platform to see if there might be a way down, and sees the intruder beginning to race off on the second level from a position directly under him. A rope dangles down.

"THERE HE IS!"

The floor quickly empties. Adder starts climbing down the rope with Werewolf hot on his heels while Gambit and Smoky drop down the ladder. "INTRUDER ALERT!" Adder yells. "He's running towards the L-1-L-2 ladder!"

Adder, Gambit, and Werewolf quickly begin to converge on that location while Smoky climbs back up the ladder and takes up a defensive position with a view of the ladder and the rope. Adder manages to get within a meter of the intruder, but suddenly loses distance as his quarry turns and heads toward another side of the base.

Smoky begins pressurizing all the weapons he can find.

Adder and Werewolf continue racing after the intruder. Werewolf begins gaining, but Adder trips on a Super Soaker lying around and falls to the floor. When he gets up, he can no longer see the intruder, so he begins following Werewolf.

Gambit looks around for an alarm system and, seeing none, begins yelling "Intruder! Intruder! Intruder! . . ." at the top of his lungs. Heads turn.

Werewolf gains another half meter as the intruder nears the edge of the second floor and pulls out another rope. Adder follows as fast as he can. They manage to close to a meter and a half by the time the intruder gets the rope attached and jumps over the edge with it. Adder begins to lag behind, still weak from the fall, and decides to give up.

Smoky finishes pressurizing the guns.

Werewolf begins following him down the rope, but the intruder climbs fast and dashes off again on the next floor down with a renewed distance advantage.

Meanwhile, Gambit frantically beseeches help from the crowd. "EVERYONE!!! HELP US OUT!!! GET THE INTRUDER!!! HE'S EVADING US LIKE CRAZY!!! GO FIND HIM!!! HE COULD BE A SPY OR DOUBLE-AGENT!!! He's down there!!!" He points.

Werewolf sprints with the energy of desperation and closes to a half meter as the intruder races across the first floor toward the ladder. Deciding to take a chance, he dives for the intruder, but misses and lands heavily on the wooden floor of the first level above the ground.

"Ow."

He scrambles back to his feet and starts running again, but is no longer as close.

Gambit, up one floor, quickly slides down the rope and then jumps off the platform to ground level. He staggers, stunned and shaken by the impact.

Werewolf recovers fully from his missed lunge in time to close to a meter of the intruder by the time he reaches the ladder. "STOP!" he calls.

Unheeding of the protests, the mysterious figure grabs hold of the sides of the ladder and slides down to the ground. He spots Gambit at the same time he is located, and sprints off in the opposite direction. Gambit tries to shoot him, but finds the range too great.

Werewolf rushes down the ladder and leaps off it, running toward the intruder. Gambit tries to follow, but falls quickly behind. He makes a futile attempt to fire up into the trees and hit them with a long distance shot, but it doesn't even come close.

Werewolf races after the intruder, beginning to lose distance as his energy gives out. Undeterred, he continues running, although slowly losing distance. Suddenly, he realizes he is chasing the intruder deeper into Adamant's territory.

Werewolf continues sprinting after his quarry, but falls further behind. The intruder begins dodging through trees and becomes difficult to track. The intruder quickly evades pursuit and disappears into the woods on his pursuer's right.

Giving up, Werewolf abandons pursuit and heads back to the base.
