Tip No. 36 Commentary

Uncommon Bidding Sequences - No. 3

The commentary on the following bidding sequences is either my own or is based on a Bridge authority, who is credited if I know it.

1.

1S - 2C - P - 3C
P - 4C

Rather than use this bid as an invitation to game, I prefer to play that it is RKC Gerber for clubs. Blackwood 4NT can be awkward when the trump suit is a minor suit - responses can commit you to unmakeable slams. Using 4C in this sequence keeps the bidding one level lower, allowing sign off at 5C when you are off 2 key cards.
2.

2H - 2S - 3S

This is a Western Cue bid, telling partner to bid 3N if he has a sure spade stopper, and otherwise bid 4C - the 3S bidder may have a running minor suit as the basis for his attempt to play in 3N, and 4C allows getting out at either 4C or 4D.
3.

1H - Dbl - P - 2C
P - 2D

This is an example of an Equal Level Conversion Double. The Doubler has 5+ Diamonds and 4 Spades and NO EXTRA VALUES. With extra values and a good Diamond suit he would have rebid 3D.
4.

1C - Dbl - P - 1S
P - 2D

This is another example of an Equal Level Conversion Double. The Doubler has 5+ Diamonds and 4 Hearts and NO EXTRA VALUES. With extra values and a good Diamond suit he would have rebid 3D.
5.

1C - P - 1N - 2C

This is Michaels - showing 5-5 in the Majors. The rule is that a minimun cue-bid when the opponents have bid only one suit is Micheals.
6.

1N - 2C - P - 2D
P - 2H - P - 3D

The 2C bid is DONT, showing clubs and one other suit. The 2D bid (apparently) asks for the DONT bidder's other suit, which is Hearts. The 3D bid says that he actually has a Diamond suit and wants to play in Diamonds. It also implies that he has a pretty good hand, since he could have bid 3D immediately with a weak hand and long Diamonds.
7.

1N - 2C - P - 2N

2C is DONT. 2N is forcing, showing a good hand and asking the DONT bidder to clarify his strength. With a weak hand, the DONT bidder rebids 3C. With a strong hand, he rebids his second suit.

8.

1N - P - 2H - P
3C - P - 3H

2H is a transfer to spades, 3C is a "Super-Accept" in spades and shows 4 spades and a Club doubleton. 3H is a re-transfer to spades. Opener must bid 3S.

Treatment by Robinson.

9.

2C - P - 2D - P
3N - P - 4C

This is Stayman. If Opener responds 4D, then 4N is natural and a sign-off, and 4H or 4S is to play.
10.

2H - P - 2S - P
2N

This bid denies 3 spades, and shows a solid Heart suit - AKQxxx. 3C and 3D would be Ogust responses, and 3H would show a good hand but not necessarily a good suit.
11.

2H - P - 4D

This is a Diamond splinter, and a slam try in Hearts.
12.

2H - P - 4C

This is a Club splinter, and a slam try in Hearts. It is not RKC Gerber. 4N would be RKC Blackwood.
