We will be using Adobe Photoshop to work with our images. The same principles will work with other programs also.

* NEVER SAVE OVER YOUR ORIGINAL IMAGE! *
You never know when you might want to use the image again in another way or medium,
or you just make a mistake!

Opening your file:

  • Open Photoshop.
  • Open your image by: File, Open..., browse to find your image and click Open.
  • Your picture should open in the file format it was originally saved as: (a jpg or tiff)

    Brightness/ Contrast:

    • Photoshop has many ways to manipulate the image.
    • If the image needs to have the brightness or contrast adjusted one way is to:
      • Open the dialog box by: Image, Adjust, Brightness/ Contrast ...
      • Make sure the preview is checked so you can see the changes
      • Slide the Brightness and Contrast sliders only in small amount to see the effects.
      • Then click OK.

Cropping: Before you crop or change the image size, you need to determine what the image will be used for and what the final size is for the image. You may want to change the image size first before cropping. You need to consider both at the same.

After you have decided on the size the and proportions of the final image you are ready to crop the image.

    • For the web:
      • View the image at 100%.
      • Crop the image as close as possible to keep the images as small as possible for faster loading.
    • For print:
      • Crop the image in the proportion that you want the final print.

Image Size: Before you crop or change the image size, you need to determine what the image will be used for and what the final size is for the image. You may want to change the image size first before cropping. You need to consider both at the same time.

    • For the web:
      • After you have decided on the final size of the image you want the easest way to work is to view at 100%
      • Then crop the image to that size if possible. If the image is still to large for what you want or if you want to make a thumbnail of your image resize using the "Pixel Dimensions:"

    • For Printing:
      • Make sure the Resample Image is NOT checked.
      • Change the "Width" or "Height" to the size you want to print the photo. You can only choose a size with a minimum resolution of 185 perferably 200 or greater. When you take it to be printed you can have it printed other sizes. Setting the resolution to 185 will tell you the maximum size you should have it printed.
