2019-2020
League Structures
There will be 4 levels of professional league at Turkish Football this year.
The rest of the levels are all amateur leagues.
Top Level - Süper Lig
Süper Lig has 18 clubs in the league.
Five clubs will qualify to European Cups (see below).
Bottom three will be relegated to 1. Lig.
Second Level - 1. Lig
1. Lig also has 18 clubs.
Top two gets promoted to Süper Lig.
The next four play Süper Lig Promotion Play-off matches. One more team gets promotion.
Bottom three clubs gets relegated to 2. Lig
Third Level - 2. Lig
2. Lig has 36 teams playing in two groups - Kırmızı (Red) Group and Beyaz (White) Group.
The group winners get promoted to 1. Lig
Next four teams in both groups (total eight) play 1. Lig Promotion matches. One more team gets promotion.
Fourth Level - 3. Lig
3. Lig has 53 teams playing in three groups. It would be 54 teams normally, but Gaziantepspor got a relegation penalty from FIFA and relegated to BAL bypassing 3. Lig. That's why one group play with 17 and others with 18 teams.
Group winners get promoted to 2. Lig.
Next four team in each group play 2. Lig Promotion matches. One more team from each group gets promotion.
8 teams gets relegated to BAL - 2 from the group with 17 team and 3 from the groups with 18 team.
Top Amateur Level - Bölgesel Amatör Lig (BAL) - Regional Amateur League
150 teams from 81 provinces play in 11 regional groups. The number of teams for each province is decided by the number of teams playing at their provincial amateur leagues.
Top team from each group will play 3. Lig Promotion matches and 9 team will get promotion.
Bottom two in each group get relegated to Local leagues.
Other clubs may remain at BAL, may have to play promotion/Relegation Play-off matches with e local team, or may relegate to their local leagues depending upon the number of teams their province has.
Second Level Amateur Leagues - Local Leagues
81 provinces has different number of levels of leagues. This may be upto three levels.
Teams from top local levels may promote directly to BAL or may have to play Promotion/Relegation Play-offs with a BAL team from their province.
Tie-Breaks
The professional leagues and amateur leagues have two different tie-breaking systems.
The professional leagues:
1 - Points accumulated
2 - Head-to-head points - points gained in the matches tying clubs played each other
3 - Head-to-head goal difference - goal difference in the matches tying clubs played each other (away goals don't give any extra advantages)
4 - Head-to-head goals scored for - number of goals scored in the matches tying clubs played each other
5 - Overall goal difference (away goals don't give any extra advantages)
6 - Overall goals scored for
7 - Less number of awarded games against
8 - Play-off match(es)
Note: TFF applies the rules 2,3, and 4 at the end of the season.
The amateur leagues:
Even though TFF uses overall goal difference as the main tie-breaker for all leagues before the end of season, it is not even a criteria for the amateurs.
1 - higher number of points obtained in all group matches
2 - higher number of points obtained in the group matches played among the teams in question
3 - superior goal difference from the group matches played among the teams in question
4 - higher number of goals scored in the group matches played among the teams in question
5 - less number of awarded matches against
6 - Play-off match
Qualifications to UEFA Club Competitions
UCL - UEFA Champions League
Turkey will be represented by two clubs at 2020-2021 UCL.
1 - Süper Lig champion will start at Group stages.
2 - 2nd placed club at Süper Lig will start at 2nd Qualifying Round of UCL League Path. (If 2018-2019 UEL Champion qualifies directly to 2019-2020 UCL, then our representative will start at 3rd Qualifying Round.)
UEL - UEFA Europa League
Three clubs will represent Turkey at 2019-2020 UEL.
2019-2020 Turkish Cup Winner becomes the first club of the three, if not already qualified to UCL.
The other two clubs are the two best clubs from Süper Lig which has not qualified to UCL. Better club becomes the second club and the other becomes the third club.
If the Cup Winner has already qualified to UCL, then the third in Süper Lig becomes the first club, fourth in Süper lig becomes the second, and the fifth in Süper Lig becomes the third club.
3 - First club according to the criteria above starts at Group Stage of 2020-2021 UEL.
4 - Second club according to the criteria above starts at 3rd Qualifying Round of Main Path at 2020-2021 UEL.
5 - Third club according to the criteria above starts at 2nd Qualifying Round of Main Path at 2020-2021 UEL.
