Adventures in Dale
The first major settlement of this region was Laketown, established 1000 Third Age. Prior to that, this region known as the "Nan Celduin" (River Running Valley) has only sparse villages. Laketown remains the center of the region's trade and culture. Dale was established approximately T.A.1100 at the ancient Adan settlement associated with the holy site of Erebor, the "Lonely Mountain".
Dale still exists in the shadow of the Lonely Mountain, and numbers less than 200. Dale is primarily settled by 3 Lakeman (from one of these will come 'Bard the Bowman' later in this Age) clans and 3 Gramuz (Northman) clans, as well as other prospectors, adventurers, and wanderers. Dwarves of the Iron Hills (150 miles east) and Elves of Thranduil's Kingdom (upriver of Laketown) are a rare, but not unheard-of, sight. The Grey Mountains to the north are the home of Orcs and Trolls, Giants and Dragons.
Tales are still told of ancient heroes daring these monsters and discovering hidden hoards, retiring in luxury the rest of their lives. Here is where our heroes begin...
