ARIZONA and NEW MEXICO
Arizona (visited 11/02)
The Grand Canyon - it's very big
We were fortunate enough to have time to stop at the Grand Canyon on our way down to Phoenix. It doesn't seem real. Awe inspiring!
Rob Hyatt (trombonist) and Xavier Perez (saxophonist)
It was a very cold day. One of these guys grew up in Wisconsin, the other in Miami - can you guess which guy is from where?!
Xavier is an outstanding musician and a cool friend
"I saw a black crow flying in a blue blue sky" A Grand Canyon crow who stopped by to speak to me for a few minutes
Bassist Joe Porter taking a break during a walk in Page, AZ
Maynard Ferguson and two Navajo women at a roadside souvenir stand on the way to the Grand Canyon
New Mexico (visited 11/02)
Adobe architecture and red lights in Santa Fe.
The Native American market has existed on this same spot for at least 100 years, probably longer.
Xavier Perez - ready for a burrito in Santa Fe
The Miracle Staircase.
Some believe that this staircase was built by a manifestation or reincarnation of Jesus Christ. The legend says that an anonymous workman mysteriously showed up after people had prayed for it to be built. The staircase itself defies all generally accepted laws of design.
Hanging out with trumpeter Ernie Hammes at a truck stop in New Mexico. That truck stop had some of the worst food I've ever eaten!
Ernie Hammes, drummer Joel Fountain, bassist Joe Porter
The states in the southwest are huge! I remember falling asleep late at night on the bus during an overnight trip while in New Mexico, and then waking up 8 hours later only to realize that we were still driving in New Mexico.
